Happy Anniversary! 👻🎄

Happy Anniversary! 👻🎄

On this day, December 19, 1843: Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in London. Six thousand copies vanished by Christmas Eve.

He wrote it in six weeks, walking the streets of London at night to clear his head. The fog, the flicker of lamps, the silence. Whatever he met out there followed him home and became part of the story.

The book earned him almost nothing. A bad contract. Costly printing. But it left behind something that never faded.

It did not invent the spirit of Christmas. It reminded people, and still does today, why generosity, compassion, and redemption matter. And beneath all that warmth, there's something colder. Spirits, chains, and warnings from beyond the grave.

It's proudly a Christmas ghost story (see full title). Likely the most famous one ever told.

That same Victorian darkness? It's alive in Ottawa.

Join us at the Bytown Museum for our Nightmare Before/After Christmas ghost tours this December. Eerie true tales, Victorian holiday creepiness, and a visit inside the oldest building in the city. If you like your holidays with a few shivers, this is it.
