✨️ Join us this Sunday, June 14, 2026 at 3 pm for Artists Talks with M.J. Steenberg, Snaige Sileika, Liz Parkinson, Karen Curry, and Yael Brotman, part of our current exhibition of "Where We’re at Now – Another Conversation" by The Gibson Girls

Where We’re at Now – Another Conversation includes new environmentally-based artwork by each of the artists, as well as two group projects. In Roundtable (2025), the artists experimented with the circle in form and substrate while working together outdoors, as they had on canoe trips for thirty years. The group’s 2018-2022 mail art collaboration (600+ images) will also be shown in a new interactive iteration.

Through their long history together, the Gibson Girls each embody the ability to support, challenge, and learn from one another. This exhibition opens their conversation to others as a gesture of hope through communication and understanding in our continuing fraught times.

✨ Meet Maria Teresa Hernandez one of Propeller Art Gallery’s talented artist members.

The practice of mindfulness has profoundly shaped Maria Teresa’s personal life and professional work, both as an artist and an art therapist. She views the creative process as inherently mindful—an act that requires shifting attention non-judgmentally to the present moment, allowing experience to flow through the pencil as a channel of visual expression.

Maria Teresa earned a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the National University of Mexico (UNAM) and a BA in Graphic Design from the Metropolitan University (UAM), Mexico. In 2011, she completed the Graduate Diploma Program in Art Therapy at the Toronto Art Therapy Institute. She is a certified yoga teacher and has been studying and practicing mindfulness at The Mindfulness Centre for nearly 20 years, integrating mindfulness into all her art therapy groups.

Maria has participated in over 21 solo exhibitions nationally and internationally, including at three major museums in Mexico: La Tallera National Institute of Fine Arts, Casa Trotsky, and Casa del Poeta. Her solo show Transient Illuminations: Where Light Breaks Through the Fractures was held at Propeller in June 2024. She has also taken part in numerous group exhibitions. She has been a member of the Propeller Gallery since 2011.

🖼 My Elemental Life by M.J. Steenberg, part of our current exhibition Where We’re at Now – Another Conversation by The Gibson Girls

M.J. Steenberg’s connection to the ‘magic Island’ of Newfoundland began with a Pouch Cove Residency in 1994. Using a conceptual approach to both the land and her own exploration of what makes landscape painting, M.J. lays her raw canvas directly onto the land, making graphite rubbings that map the geological and geographical passages of our earth and of time. The land, in fact, becomes her matrix. Added ash and acrylic capture an immediate sense of beauty and place while change in the land itself happens as our climate undergoes more frequent and severe events.
