🪘 Come experience bullerengue beyond the stage and learn directly from its tradition bearers.

The first Canadian tour of Voces del Bullerengue is about more than the performances. Alongside the concerts, the residency includes a series of cultural and community exchange workshops, creating opportunities to share the knowledge, stories, and practices surrounding bullerengue beyond the stage.

Led by the maestras themselves, these participatory workshops will explore song, call and response, percussion, rhythm, and dance — offering an opportunity to learn directly from the women who have carried and transmitted these traditions across generations.

💛💙❤️‍🩹Our hearts are with the people and communities in Colombia affected by the devastating earthquake.
At this moment, we feel an even deeper responsibility to celebrate and bring visibility to the artistic practices that protect Afro-Colombian cultural memory, oral traditions, and collective histories and to the artists and communities who continue to carry them forward.

💫Next Wednesday, August 19, we will gather to witness the opening performance of the first-ever Canadian tour of Voces del Bullerengue, a group of extraordinary maestras and cantadoras rooted in rural communities near Montes de María, including Evitar, María la Baja and Villa Gloria in Colombia’s northwest region. Through voice, percussion, call and response, storytelling, and dance, these women carry bullerengue, an Afro-Colombian musical and oral tradition led and preserved largely by generations of women, a living expression of cultural pride and resilience.

🌷We are also deeply honoured to have Lido Pimienta as a collaborator on this project. Drawing from her own connection to Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Lido has helped shape the artistic and visual vision of this Canadian residency. On July 19, she’ll join us in person and bless the dance floor with a special DJ set to close the night. ✨

In difficult times, gathering around music, culture, and community can also be a way of holding each other close.

💫We are honoured to unveil the beautiful artwork created by Lido Pimienta for the first Canadian tour of ANÓNIMAS & RESILIENTES -Voces del Bullerengue.

Deeply rooted in the cultural traditions of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, Lido Pimienta has shaped the visual identity of this project, bringing her unmistakable artistic vision to a residency and concert series that celebrates the living legacy of Bullerengue. Her contribution reflects a profound connection to the music, stories, and communities at the heart of this collaboration.

Fresh off the release of her acclaimed new album, “Caribenya”, the Grammy,Latin Grammy and Polaris Music Prize–winning artist will also join the maestras at their Toronto concert on August 19 at Lula Lounge with a DJ set drawing from the sounds that have influenced her throughout her career.

For generations, the women of Voces del Bullerengue have safeguarded ancestral songs, rhythms, and oral traditions, passing them from elder to elder through community, ceremony, and celebration. Their residency in Canada offers a rare opportunity to experience this remarkable musical tradition directly from its cultural bearers.

ANÓNIMAS & RESILIENTES : Voces del Bullerengue, a story of voices Carrying History ❤️

From the Afro-descendant communities of Colombia’s Caribbean coast, this Latin-Grammy nominated collective of elder women has preserved an ancestral musical tradition across generations.

The singers of Voces del Bullerengue are all women over the age of 60, joining us from the towns of Evitar, María La Baja, San José del Playón, Villa Gloria, and San Cristóbal del Trozo, located close to the Canal del Dique.
