A report by The Intercept based on internal Meta documents indicates that Israel's government formally petitioned the company to remove content about its conflict with Iran from Facebook and Instagram. The content flagged for removal includes posts lamenting the death of Iran's late Supreme Leader, content backing Iranian retaliatory actions, and accounts posting military analysis from an Iranian perspective. Israel's Office of the State Attorney regularly files takedown requests with major social platforms. This recent finding supports earlier evidence showing Meta complied with most of Israel's content removal requests since October 2023, with the majority of the removed content found to be in support of Palestinians, according to watchdogs. Meta has not issued a detailed public statement in response to the report.
