This week we're profiling our storytellers for The Spoke: DIY Edition at The Bentway!

Joey Nicholson is just one of our four talented DIY storytellers performing this Sunday at 1pm at The Bentway Beer Garden. Best of all: it's FREE!

"Hello there, I’m Joey! I’ve been tattooing for 11 years, with a home base in Toronto. I frequently travel throughout Canada, tattooing at conventions and select studios. I have also done residencies and guest spots in several international locations.

I have a degree in Fine Art from OCAD University and have shown my paintings in galleries in Toronto and Vancouver. In my spare time, I like to skateboard and hang out with my dog, Frida. I am passionate about feminism and q***r activism, which I try to incorporate into my tattooing and art practice as much as possible."

Announcing our storytellers for The Spoke: Storytelling Event + Podcast this Sunday!

We're partnering with The Bentway for an afternoon of DIY-related stories by Amanda Cordner, Graham Isador, Joey Nicholson and Evan Rissi.

We'll be profiling each of them over the next few days, starting with AMANDA: she's a creator and performer who recently toured her solo show, Body So Fluorescent across Canada and in the United States. It's making its Toronto premier at the SummerWorks Performance Festival and continues to pique interest internationally. She appeared in Featherweight, a Toronto Fringe Festival production, which was awarded NOW Magazine's critic's pick in 2018. Amanda is also active in the film and television industry, most recently appearing in an episode of Baroness Von Sketch.

Thanks to everyone who came out to last night's special edition of The Spoke! We heard some pretty amazing stories from BloodWatch.org.

8pm at Crow's Theatre. Get there early to get a seat!

TONIGHT! The Spoke: BloodWatch Edition is at 8pm at Streetcar Crowsnest. The event is FREE but make sure to show up a few minutes early to snag a seat!

We're pretty excited to hear stories from the BloodWatch.org team, including CoFounder and Chair Mike McCarthy. As the Vice-President of the Canadian Hemophilia Society, Mike was the national spokesperson for Canadians infected by blood tainted with Hepatitis C. His efforts resulted in a landmark $2.4 billion settlement with the federal government on behalf of the victims of tainted blood. In 2001, he was appointed Senior Policy Advisor to the Ontario Minister of Health and has been awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Award.

These are some incredible storytellers. Gonna be a heckuva night.

One more sleep before The Spoke: BloodWatch Edition!

The Spoke: BloodWatch Edition is tomorrow!

We're profiling our incredible speakers from BloodWatch.org as we gear up for this very special edition of The Spoke:

BloodWatch CoFounder and Executive Director Kat Lanteigne is a Toronto based writer, actor and safe blood advocate. Her play, Tainted, which tells the story of how the tainted blood crisis impacted Canadian families, premiered in 2013. Kat was the lead advocate who successfully petitioned the Ontario Government to ban private paid plasma clinics from opening and subsequently toured her play to support the legislation. In December of 2014 The Voluntary Blood Donations Act was passed in a unanimous vote in Ontario.

Don't miss Kat's story tomorrow at 8pm at Streetcar Crowsnest, 245 Carlaw Ave.

Best of all it's free - yep, free! - and we hope you'll consider a donation to BloodWatch to support their vital work.

In addition to founding BloodWatch, he and his wife Hillary started the Bott-Harrington Fellowships in bleeding disorder nursing at St. Michael’s Hospital as well as the Plater-Kreppner Health Law Internships at Osgoode Law School.

This Wednesday The Spoke and Outside the March host BloodWatch.org for a really special storytelling event.

The last time The Spoke hosted an organization was to benefit Camp Ooch and it was a super event. You can listen to a story from Zoe Keefer from that evening, "The Cocoa on the Go-go," by checking out our website.

The Spoke: BloodWatch Edition is Wednesday at 8pm at Streetcar Crowsnest. You're gonna wanna be there.

The Spoke is Outside the March’s monthly storytelling event. Since 2012, The Spoke has featured a cross-section of people telling true stories from their lives, based around a common theme. We have run over forty editions of the live event, and featured almost two hundred storytellers, who span all…
