How do you move an audience through an exhibition without asking them to leave their seats?
In Toronto, one answer was light.
As Mussorgsky’s music moved from one image to the next, Paula’s paintings emerged, receded and returned, allowing the audience to travel through her visual cycle alongside the score.
The Promenade became the path through the room, carrying the audience from image to image as Mussorgsky once moved through Hartmann’s exhibition more than 150 years ago.
This footage and audio come directly from the live Toronto presentation with the Hannaford Street Silver Band , building toward The Great Gate of Kiev.
At SweetWater, the idea evolves again. Five Promenade paintings will remain physically present while projection and animation carry the larger cycle through the music.
Same journey. A new room. A new way through it.
