The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir joins the Canadian choral community in mourning the loss of Ruth Watson Henderson, a beloved composer, pianist, organist, and one of our country’s most treasured musical voices.

Reflecting on her remarkable legacy, Artistic Director Jean-Sébastien Vallée shared: “Ruth had a rare gift for writing music that speaks directly to singers and audiences alike. Her music, marked by lyricism, exceptional craftsmanship, and a profound understanding of the choral art, has enriched the lives of countless musicians and will continue to resonate wherever people gather to sing.”

The Toronto Mendelssohn Choir has long cherished a special connection with Ruth. In August 1972, she joined the Choir on an international tour alongside Canadian Brass and soprano Roxolana Roslak, with performances in England, Paris, and Lucerne. Over the years, we have continued to perform and celebrate her music, and her artistic legacy remains woven into the fabric of both our organization and Toronto’s choral community.

We are profoundly grateful for the gift of her music and for the inspiration she brought to so many singers, conductors, and audiences. Her voice will continue to resonate through choirs across Canada and beyond for generations to come.
Our thoughts are with her family, friends, colleagues, and the countless musicians whose lives she touched.

Rest in peace, Ruth.

Our Pathways: Choral Creation program wrapped up its first year last week! This program was created to help address real barriers in the field by giving emerging composers access to mentorship, resources, and the opportunity to hear their work performed.

“If we want the choral art form to thrive, we have to invest not only in performance, but in creation,” says Artistic Director Jean-Sébastien Vallée. This year’s program was led by TMChoir Composer-in-Residence Stephanie Martin, who worked closely with participants throughout the process.

The program reflects TMChoir’s broader artistic vision, investing in the development of new music to help shape the future of the choral art form.

On Saturday, we came together for an evening of deeply moving and profoundly honest music with Eric Whitacre’s The Sacred Veil. It was a performance filled with reflection, tenderness, and shared humanity—one that will stay with us for a long time.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and took part in this special evening. Your presence, and your participation in our shared tribute honouring and remembering those touched by cancer, made the experience even more meaningful.

In music, remembrance, and community, we found something truly powerful.

It is with great sadness that TMChoir acknowledges the passing of Michael Koerner C.M., inaugural Chancellor of the Royal Conservatory of Music and a towering figure in Canadian music and philanthropy. Koerner Hall, one of TMChoir’s preferred performance spaces, stands as a testament to Mr. Koerner’s legacy and passion for music and the arts in Canada.

From TMChoir’s appearance at Koerner Hall’s opening gala to our most recent performance, we, along with countless other musicians and arts organizations, are the beneficiaries of the passion, vision, and generosity embodied by Michael and his wife Sonja. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of this legendary patron and philanthropist.

This National Volunteer Week, we celebrate the people who ignite volunteerism in our communities and the incredible impact of civic participation across Canada.

As part of International Volunteer Year and the year-long Ignite Volunteerism initiative, this week is an opportunity to recognize the power of volunteering, rebuild community connections, and celebrate the stories of those who give their time so generously.

At the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir, our volunteers are the heart of everything we do.

Our volunteer choristers bring extraordinary dedication, artistry, and generosity to every rehearsal and performance. Their commitment to music and community is remarkable, and we are endlessly grateful for the passion and care they bring to TMChoir.

Many of our choristers also support the organization as donors, board members, and ambassadors, giving even more of themselves to help sustain and shape our future. We are equally grateful to our community volunteers and alumni who help make our events possible, from concerts and performances to community gatherings and special initiatives.

For over 131 years, volunteers have helped build and carry this organization forward. It is a powerful reminder of what can happen when people come together in service of something larger than themselves.

Thank you for being such an essential part of our TMCommunity.

This Saturday, alongside The Sacred Veil, we will perform the world premiere of Mystical Hope by TMChoir Composer-in-Residence Stephanie Martin. This new work sits in quiet conversation with Eric Whitacre’s powerful meditation on love and loss.

Set to text by Robert Pynn, this piece holds space for both anguish and possibility, gently turning us toward resilience, and toward the living.

Be among the first to hear it.
