This is Keegan!

You know Keegan is in the room because the air will suddenly come alive – one conversation with him and you’ll feel like a superhero! What I love most is his ability to bring the best out of other people and he does so with the greatest conviction. Chock full of emoticons, even his messages burst with feeling and enthusiasm!

Food makes Keegan happiest – whether it is meat, ice cream, or Nutella. Life also wouldn’t be worth living without the special someone who makes him smile, outdoor adventures, and family… but to let’s be honest – all of those can be done with food in the picture.

Family lies at the heart of his core values. It’s the most important and will always come first. In his own words, “love is what makes the world go round and hopefully I’ll figure it out someday [insert emoticon]”. All of his personal philosophies focus on: being true to yourself, hard work with a humble heart, and treating others only as you’d expect to be treated.

Keegan hopes to one day start his own practice and grow it into an empire. He will travel the world and experience everything it has to offer… and lots and lots of food! I wish you all the best in your adventures, both near and far! As for love… we have a life time to figure that out!

This is Jessica!

No matter how miserable I am, her whole-hearted laugh always puts a smile on my face. “Sometimes s**t happens and life sucks… but a smile goes a long way” – couldn’t have said it better myself.

Jessica is all about the journey: enjoying the small things and experiences that ultimately shape who you are when arriving at the great “end goal”. It’s about working hard, and it’s the people who hustle that inspire her most. With everything seconds away at our fingertips our inner drive for ingenuity and discovery becomes dampened. But those who stick it out and push themselves for their passion and craft… they are inspirational.

As you can see, Jessica should have gone into motivational speaking instead of dentistry. It is fitting that I leave you with one of her favorite quotes from Modern Family:

“When life gives you lemonade, make lemons. Life will be all like ‘WHAT?!’”

This is Anthony!

When we aren’t operating together, Anthony and I exchange workout routines and discuss the finer points of diet, macros, and protein intake. You know, because we’re obviously the next Schwarzeneggers.

Anthony has a sharp sense of humor and an extremely keen ear for music. As the OR radio blares on, every song title and artist spills from his lips… like ketchup from an EZ Squeeze Bottle. I like to imagine that he comes from a long line of disk jockeys and jukebox builders who pass their time by competing in international music trivia competitions.

It has been a pleasure working alongside and learning from you. Hopefully we’ll see each other again in the clinic, or lifting ridiculously heavy weights at the gym.

This is Mike!

Although I first knew Mike Laschuk as the unofficial third intern at Sunnybrook, most of our patients recognize him as the “doctor with the pretty eyes”. No arguing there. He is often seen around town sporting the most comfortable clothes in the world: hospital scrubs. Instead of a closet of suits and ties, I imagine Mike proudly displaying dozens of scrub sets, each a different subtle hue of Lagoon Green.

But let’s be serious: I have never met a colleague that put so much devotion in his patients. He will put as much care in explaining how to reconstruct a fractured mandible as he does with extracting a loose tooth. In the operating room, Mike is patient and a skilled teacher to those around him (ahem, me). Patients love him for the compassion; staff love him for the unparalleled work ethic.

This is Rahul!

I first met Rahul/Bear Grylls when we interviewed together for hospital residency positions in Toronto. Always the first to compliment, this guy is a straight shooter and will always find remarkable qualities in any situation. As a fellow dentist he enjoys working hard and is fueled by the fact that people leave his office a little happier. He is inspired by his parents, who imbibe the qualities of hard work and humbleness to make himself a better person.

Born in Bombay, Rahul will soon be showing his fiancée his childhood setting through a different set of eyes – culture, food, and family. When asked what he looks forward to in marriage: waking up extra early to make breakfast, and long conversations over wine.

Rahul, you’re golden! Keep on living life “Shah-sized” and loving those around you!

This is Omid!

Instead of catching waves or throwing a few more “shrimp on the barbie”, Omid spent part of his Australian summer vacation shadowing at our dental clinic. Being more familiar with Toronto, he introduced us to some of his favourite eating establishments on College St (Pomegranate, Caplansky’s).

Naturally, having competitive soccer in his blood makes Omid a huge Manchester United fan. And if marooned on an island with the choice of only one TV show, it would be a box set of “Scrubs”. Favourite movie? Shawshank Redemption.

Alas, thank you for the headshot! You’re a hard-working man who has left a lasting positive impression on us – remember to visit! Wishing you all the best as you enter your final year of dentistry at University of Melbourne!
