🚨BREAKING: Bill S-248, Caribbean Heritage Month Act, advances in the Senate of Canada.

On June 9, 2026, Senator Paulette Senior presented Bill S-248 for Second Reading (debate in the Senate on the bill). After the Senator’s speech, Senator Leo Housakos, Leader of the Opposition in the Senate of Canada (Conservative), shared his support for the Bill and called for an immediate vote - and Second Reading was passed in the Senate! The Bill was then referred to the Standing Senate Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology.

This recognition of Canada’s Caribbean community is long overdue. Despite over one million Canadians from or with family origins in the Caribbean, the community remains underrepresented, unappreciated, and unrecognized. Many other ethnocultural and religious communities in Canada have been recognized by the federal government with an awareness month designation. Canada’s Caribbean community deserves to have its distinct culture and contributions to the nation recognized and celebrated.

Canada’s Caribbean community is uniting for Caribbean Heritage Month.

Visit CaribbeanMonth.ca for more information on Caribbean Heritage Month in Canada. Together, we can stand up for our community and culture to be recognized for our contributions to Canada.

Identifying and celebrating cultural and national communities in Canada is not a rarity. It’s quite common, and several other communities have received this honour. This provides them with a special opportunity to share and celebrate their culture and heritage. More importantly, it officially recognizes their place within the fabric of Canada’s multicultural fabric.

It is time for a national Caribbean Heritage Month in Canada.

This initiative is strong when we work as a collective. Demonstrating the support of the community is vital to ensuring the government acts on this. To date, 21 Caribbean-Canadian-led and serving organizations, associations and festivals from across the country have come together to support Caribbean Heritage Month.
