Critical Distance provides a venue and context for curators and artists in all stages of their professional development. As an independent curator-led initiative, our mission springs from the interests, motivations and methodologies of contemporary curatorial practice, foregrounding critical inquiry, collaboration, and experimentation in making new connections between artists, art forms, ideas, im

ages, objects, environments, and audiences. Through our exhibitions and events, we seek to stimulate curiosity, conversation, and critical thinking on contemporary culture and the curation/creation of exhibitions themselves through the lenses of collecting, organizing, displaying, and viewing or experiencing. Through our publishing program, each exhibition is fully documented in a modest yet beautifully designed catalogue with original curatorial essay — a welcome benefit and service to the artists and curators whose work is published, as well as to audiences who receive reader-friendly context on the work and exhibition. Through an inclusive and varied program of events including both kid– and adult-friendly talks, screenings, workshops, performances and more, we aim to enrich the exhibition experience and encourage active audience participation in our projects and programming. In supporting and collaborating with curators, artists, organizations, and audiences, Critical Distance advances topical, outward-looking, forward-thinking, and visually/conceptually compelling projects in a space that is welcoming, unintimidating, and accessible for all. Our unique model of providing support for curatorial practice and inquiry while fostering risk-taking and experimentation encourages participants to consider new approaches to the display and dissemination of art, ideas, and critical discourses on the intersections between curating and contemporary issues.

Critical Distance is thrilled to announce our fourth Public Art Billboard and Exhibition Essay Career Launcher, presented in partnership with OCADU’s RBC Centre for Emerging Artists & Designers OCAD U RBC CEAD.

Jenna FitzGerald’s billboard is now on view at 180 Shaw Street, with a commissioned essay by Annapoorane Rajagopal Valarmathy available to read via QR code on the billboard label, in-gallery at 401 Richmond, or on our website at criticaldistance.ca (link in bio). Annapoorane also provides a foraging bookmark template, mushbook/bookforage, available for downloading on the last page of the essay.

About the OCAD U Career Launcher Recipients:
Jenna FitzGerald is a multidisciplinary artist whose work explores the intersection of technology and nature, inspired by both organic and digital imagery and materials. Her artworks reflect impermanence in the digital age and create new mythologies to reveal the magic in the world all around us, as well as our current moment within the Anthropocene. FitzGerald employs a variety of mediums throughout her work, including photography, film, graphic design, 3D modelling, and experiential installations. Jenna Antonia FitzGerald

Annapoorane Rajagopal Valarmathy is a design practitioner. She is interested in how thoughtful systems and experiences can influence the way people
think, interact, and create. Her work explores how design can scaffold people through moments of transition.

When will I be notified about my application?

Applications are being accepted on a rolling basis, with all successful applicants to be notified by mid-October.

As space is limited, we encourage submitting sooner than later; applications received earlier are weighted favourably over those received later. All applications are reviewed through a collaborative process between Critical Distance, KRIT Zine, and/or advisory partners as relevant. While we are unable to provide detailed feedback at this time, all complete submissions will receive notifcation.

If successful, your confirmation (and payment, if tabling) must be received within 2 weeks of notification. If not successful, stay tuned for future opportunities in 2027 and beyond!

What are the fees for participating or attending?

There is NO FEE to apply to participate in PROTOTYPE's fair/market/symposium/spotlights.

To table the fair in-person, fees are CAD $160 for a full table (6 ft) and $80 for half (3 ft). All proceeds go toward covering our costs in producing PROTOTYPE.

Publishers accepted for consignment receive a 1-year term and are paid 60% of proceeds from our Featured Publications table at the fair and across 2027 at Critical Distance.

Successful proposals for the symposium will be supported with CAD $250 honoraria (to be topped up to CARFAC pending grant results).

PROTOTYPE will be free to attend and open to the public all 3 days, from Friday eveningthrough sunday afternoon, Nov 20-22, 2026.

Can I Participate if I don’t live in Toronto?

Absolutely. We built PROTOTYPE to amplify critical + experimental arts publishing from across Canada and around the world, and to connect networks across cultures, genres, and generations with Toronto publishers and wider publics. Distance shouldn‘t limit our collective reach!

Out-of-town participants have the option to ship materials to Critical Distance before the event, and will be warmly welcomed through a special reception, potential inclusion in Regional Spotlights, recommendations for Toronto’s must-see (TBA aka Toronto Biennial of Art!) and under-the-radar (TBD!) arts spaces and events, and more.

Can‘t travel this year? Participate remotely by applying to consign or be included in a special section - details in the call!

Starting with the basics, we will cover everything you need to know before applying.

#1 What is PROTOTYPE?
PROTOTYPE is a weekend-long arts publishing festival taking place in Toronto this Fall, from November 20-22, 2026.
Focused on critical + experimental forms of writing, editing, designing, and distributing art books, periodicals, multiples, editions, and zines by any means, PROTOTYPE connects local arts publishing communities with national + international artists, writers, publishers, and distributors in-person and through remote participation in an art book fair + market, a public symposium, special exhibitions, and other participatory programming.
Free and open to the public, PROTOTYPE 2026 welcomes all who are interested in arts publishing‘s connective potential.
