Ah! The delight of that red! My sculptures are all domestic in scale - they easily assert themselves in spaces near and dear to you. Some are intended as alternatives to two-dimensional works, creating relief, shadow, dimension and intrigue instead of planar surfaces. All are hand made. The theme of ecology runs through all my work, asking the viewer to contemplate some kind of state, relationship or ecological reality. All the attributes I’ve just mentioned are reflected in the works on display in this group art show where I have the good fortune of being associated with other outstanding artists - , , Dan Stewart, and .

NEW WORK. This sculpture in red clay was fitted to the bisque stage then treated with stains, tinted polish and then wax. Taking its initial cues from Olmec baby sculptures from 1000 BCE and also influenced by a recent trip to CDMX where we visited Diego Rivera’s museum, this clay sculpture references our current ecological crisis.

This sculpture created some turmoil in me as I grappled with its complex themes and debated within myself about the forms of material cultural record that artists leave behind. Based on mysterious Olmec baby figures from 1000 BCE - ancient material cultural records also “left behind”.

Making a platter is a little like making pastry, pasta or some kind of dough. I use a rolling pin, I roll it out, I cut it, I shape it, I let it dry, I bake it, inspect it, glaze and bake again, pray there’s no warping, cracking, missing glaze. And then - I adorn with appetizers and feast! And you should too!

This bird sculpture of a parrot’s is a deliberate focus on the head and upper part of the body - a bust. Generally a format in sculpture focusing on humans it seemed appropriate here because I wanted to focus on the expressiveness of the bird and its gaze - shown from both sides here to allow for a focus on the subtle differences. As I was originally inspired by the Military Macaw the assertive disposition, ruffled feathers and piercing glances seemed to fit the authority of this amazing bird.
