The work of Craft Ontario is driven by the makers we are able to support with our programming and advocacy. We are grateful to continue this work in 2027, thanks to funding received through the Ontario Arts Operating Fund (Visual Arts), from the Ontario Arts Council.

This funding is core to supporting craftspeople in our operations of:

- The annual Craft Awards Program
- Sharing the realities of studio practices and advocating for craftspeople
- Hosting partner exhibitions (like the 2026 Graduate Show)
- Publishing
- Facilitating artist talks and workshops
- Programming curated exhibitions to support large, conceptual craft projects

Since our main address has changed, so has our MPP -- we are now in the Fort York--Spadina riding and we thank our current MPP, Chris Glover for supporting craft through this funding.

It's time to celebrate the 2026 Craft Awards!

Join us for the Craft Award Ceremony, happening Thursday, October 22, 7-9pm. This year's Ceremony will take place in Urbanspace Gallery, on the ground floor of 401 Richmond Street West, Toronto.

The Awards Ceremony will also recognize the accomplishments of the 2026 John and Barbara Mather Award for Lifetime Achievement recipient, as well as the 2026 Jean Johnson Craft Writing Award recipient, and shortlisted writers.

The exhibition of artwork by 2026 Craft Award recipients will be on view in the Craft Ontario Gallery from October 16 - November 14. This annual exhibition is one of the most varied displays of material practices the gallery shows, and includes work by makers at all career levels.

Congratulations to the 2026 recipient of the Melinda Mayhall Memorial Award in Indigenous Craft: Maria-Margaretta Cabana Boucher!

Maria - Margaretta’s practice is an exploration of the Michif self archive, autobiographical beadwork and objects of the everyday. Using Métis identity as a place of transformation she questions how memory, personal experience, motherhood, and ancestral relations influence her understanding of self.

We are proud to display this year's print collection from Kinngait Studios in the preview exhibition (opening tomorrow, September 30), which includes artworks depicting Inuit kakiniit (body tattoos), myths and legends, clothing, and animals that are hunted and are a part of Inuit life.

The Canadian government has a long, shameful history of trying to destroy Inuit culture through colonial violence, including through residental schools.

The Inuit have had the ways they hunt and fish villainized (watch 'Angry Inuk'!), cultural markings forbidden, and language and traditional ways of living controlled. These communities are among the most culturally resilient in North America and produce distinctly vibrant music and artwork.

The Craft Ontario Gallery will be open on this year's Truth and Reconciliation Day. We invite you to the gallery from September 30 - October 10 to experience the 2026 Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection for yourself, and to experience and understand a bit more of life in the North through these prints.
