Behind the scenes of how we photograph our clients artwork for official reports. This painting is being photographed for the final part of its treatment and was carefully wrapped and crates after this. Conservation reports detail the condition, treatment of a painting and offer professional suggestions to our clients.

It’s a rare occurrence that one of my conservators or employees captures me with our camera. It’s usually me who’s capturing our models [conservators] while they’re at work.

After Treatment: Of the Gira poster. We flattened the poster using localized humidity to reduce the crinkles. We then isolated the losses and inpainted with QoR colours with an addition of Aquazol for intense shine. Overall, we reduced all damage to by 95-100%. In my opinion, our camera lens is has super-resolution and picked up small highlights, as it’s difficult to find our in painting when looking at the poster in-person.

Framing for two prints. We used preservation materials, including conservation glass, conservation mat board and pH neutral backing paper and foam cores. Jennifer’s prints are also printed using archival inks. We used an eclectic turquoise and a subdued dark wood frame so that these pieces can be hung anywhere. Such a treat!

AFTER TREATMENT: Monument or Public Art Conservation is one of my favourite disciplines. We make these bronze sculptures sparkle at the end of their treatment and you can see the dramatic difference in the before and after of these photos. Our clients and residents of the building also love watching us work, asking us questions and giving us praise. The immediate effect this project has on people, makes the countless hours of research into chemicals and materials, meetings and drawbacks so worth it for me, personally.

We clean the sculptures using a lot of elbow grease and conservation products that help remove the dirt, acid and chemical build up on the surface from the harsh Toronto environment. Art-Kitect uses a pure anionic detergent with a neutral pH to clean the sculpture followed by an organic based wax and then a petroleum based wax.

For more information on our past public art projects or to book a consultation on your public art project, please see our detailed website: WWW.ART-KITECT.COM or contact Elissa directly at 647-348-8182.

This is a colourfield painting imported from Europe. A colourfield doesn’t have a gesso layer (also called a ground layer). We suspect that this artwork may even be a sketch. It was brought to us rolled, so we cleaned it up and bought new stretchers (). You can see in the following photos 👉🏼 that we’ve added some “ground layer”, so that we may properly inpatient with a combination of Q’OR colours and Liquitex acrylics. We added an isolation barrier in between for reversibility purposes.

Restretching to stabilize and tighten the canvas, following a strip-lining with Beva film and polyester sailcloth. Our paintings conservator then filled in areas of media loss with a conservation grade gesso and sanded it to be flush with the canvas. The pink is really coming out now, so I’m very with that
