It is with great sadness that The National Ballet of Canada announces the passing of former Principal Dancer and Principal Character Artist Hazaros (Lazo) Surmeyan. Lazo dedicated 54 years to The National Ballet of Canada, joining the company as a Principal Dancer in 1966. Throughout his distinguished career he was admired for his danseur noble qualities, commanding stage presence and exceptional artistry. In 1986, he was appointed Principal Character Artist, becoming one of the company’s leading interpreters of character roles and helping to define the position within the organization.

Lazo's generosity and dedication touched generations of colleagues and audiences and his legacy remains an important part of the National Ballet’s history and will continue to inspire future artists.

We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife, former dancer, Principal Character Artist and Ballet Mistress Lorna Geddes, and to all of Lazo’s family, friends, colleagues and loved ones. Lazo will be remembered with great affection, respect and gratitude. He will be greatly missed.

Big news! The National Ballet of Canada's Reverence, Procession and co-production Rainbow on Mars have been nominated for a total of seven Dora Mavor Moore Awards! 🎉

⭐️ Reverence by Choreographic Associate Ethan Colangelo has been nominated for Outstanding Production, Outstanding Choreography (Ethan Colangelo), Outstanding Original Sound Composition (Ben Waters) and Outstanding Achievement in Design (Jeff Logue for lighting). The ballet premiered May 2025 to exceptional reviews.

⭐️ Procession by Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber has been nominated for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble. This production premiered earlier this season in November 2025, and was the first work the pair created for the company. It also went on tour to the National Arts Centre in Ottawa this past April.
