Across time and cultures, the heart is universally associated with life, love, compassion, the essential makings in creating and sustaining shared space for understanding, inclusion and connection between cultures and peoples.

Furthering the concept of Friendship Through Culture that JCCC has championed since its inception, this artwork juxtaposes the Golden Section (or Golden Ratio), a long-standing symbol of Western aesthetic ideals, with the calligraphic expression โ€œKokoro wa isshoโ€, rendered in Japanese cursive style.

Through this deliberate visual interplay, the work reflects mutual understanding and cultural harmony, inviting viewers to consider how distinct cultural symbols can come together in a shared visual language that honors heritage while pointing toward collective futures.

In shodo (Japanese calligraphy) "Ai" is Love and it means a deeper, broader love that includes affection for family, friends, or ideals, as opposed to the more specific romantic love of "koi" (ๆ‹). The kanji ๆ„› is a 13-stroke character with the radical "kokoro" (ๅฟƒ), meaning "heart," at its core.

โ€œGo Further / Keep goingโ€ encapsulates a positive, forward-looking sentiment, often associated with personal development, overcoming challenges, and making progress in life or work. This aligns well with the philosophical aspects of Japanese calligraphy, which is deeply influenced by Zen Buddhism and emphasizes mindfulness, concentration, and expressing one's inner spirit.

Ensล in Japan, China and in most Far Eastern philosophies, represents an expression of life, the beginning, the throughout and the end of it, while it can also be interpreted as a revelation of a world without beginning and end. Associated with Zen Buddhism, Ensล is the circle of absolute enlightenment.

โ€œmuโ€ in Japanese and Korean, or โ€œwuโ€ in Chinese, the empty space inside of Ensล, is the void of nothingness, seen as pure awareness prior to experience or knowledge in Buddhism, it is often placed as the center of Zen practice.

A closed or complete circle represents the unattainable but idealistic idea of perfection. In contrast, an open or incomplete circle represents the beauty of imperfection or wabi-sabi as Zen practitioners relate to it.

Ensล is at the center of Shodo (the way of writing) in Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, even though it is a symbol and not a character. It is drawn or painted in one uninterrupted stroke, in a single breath with a clear mind detached from outside interference. It stands at the core of pure creativity in art and inspires positivity in all areas of oneโ€™s life.

"Tenkoku" is the Japanese term for the process of designing and carving an artistโ€™s or a calligrapherโ€™s name on the polished surface of a rectangular, oblong or cylinder-shaped soft stone called a seal, or Hanko in Japanese. The most common Hanko sizes fit within a square of 8 - 25 mm.

Tenkoku" is a high form of art used in East Asian countries including Japan where the seal is a Hanko, in China a XI or YรฌnJian and in Korea is known as Dojang. Artists and calligraphers create their own seal to be representative of their brand, personality, a feeling or a place and it often be based on an idiom, a haiku, a poem or a personal reflection.

There are two forms of engraving a seal: relief (Yang) and intaglio (Yin). The seals may be used individually on together as Yin and Yang.

My new Hanko represents Water in Japanese ๆฐด ( ใฟใš ) ( Mizu )

Water holds a great significance in all worldโ€™s cultures. Perhaps one of the most recognizable sayings about water is Bruce Leeโ€™s famous quoteโ€ You put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Water can flow, or it can crash. Be water, my friend.โ€

The meaning is evident: whatever situation life puts you in, embrace it, do not freeze, be brave, learn, adapt, act appropriately, stay at peace.
