Ensล in Japan, China and in most Far Eastern philosophies, represents an expression of life, the beginning, the throughout and the end of it, while it can also be interpreted as a revelation of a world without beginning and end. Associated with Zen Buddhism, Ensล is the circle of absolute enlightenment.
โmuโ in Japanese and Korean, or โwuโ in Chinese, the empty space inside of Ensล, is the void of nothingness, seen as pure awareness prior to experience or knowledge in Buddhism, it is often placed as the center of Zen practice.
A closed or complete circle represents the unattainable but idealistic idea of perfection. In contrast, an open or incomplete circle represents the beauty of imperfection or wabi-sabi as Zen practitioners relate to it.
Ensล is at the center of Shodo (the way of writing) in Japanese and Chinese calligraphy, even though it is a symbol and not a character. It is drawn or painted in one uninterrupted stroke, in a single breath with a clear mind detached from outside interference. It stands at the core of pure creativity in art and inspires positivity in all areas of oneโs life.
