Open to everyone regardless of race, religion, s*x or age, the JCCC provides a place - and more importantly, the impetus - for the exchange of ideas; a showca

The JCCC offers a wide variety of Japanese cultural programs and experiences for its 3,500 members - almost half of whom are of non-Japanese ancestry, and approximately 35 percent who are seniors. The JCCC showcases the creative energy and dedication of many talented artisans, musicians, dancers and martial arts practitioners. The JCCC fosters mutual understanding and facilitates the exchange of information about Japanese culture with the community-at-large through a wide range of exciting programs. The Centre also works to build a spirit of co-operation and harmony among people of different cultures by coordinating community events and programs with other ethnic organizations. Under the guidance of Kuwabara Payne McKenna Blumberg Architects, the JCCC has taken on a modern feel since moving from its original home at 123 Wynford Drive. Registered charity # 118972967RR0001

Majimu lives in Okinawa with her mother and grandmother who runs a small tofu shop. She is stuck in a dead-end job until one day, two encounters change her life. First, a call for entries to the company’s internal venture contest; and secondly, her discovery of rum at the bar she always visits with her grandmother. She is captivated by its charm and learns that its key ingredient is sugarcane. Although Okinawa is full of sugarcane, no one is making agricole rum. An idea strikes her: a rum made entirely in Okinawa.

What began as a simple idea grows into something much larger as Majimu’s project moves forward in surprising and unpredictable ways. Funny, warm-hearted and full of charming performances, Purehearted is a joyful, crowd-pleasing film for everyone, rum-lovers and tea-totallers alike.

Based on a true story made famous by Maha Harada’s popular novel.

TORORO(Toronto-based Okinawan sanshin group) will perform prior to the Okinawa-based closing night screening of PUREHEARTED.

✨Director Shiho Kataoka in Attendance✨

Annually, between 150,000 to 200,000 travelers visit Shikoku Island to complete the 88 Temple Pilgrimage (Shikoku Henro). For more than nine centuries, they have walked a route of approximately 1200 kilometres linking 88 temples and following in the footsteps of master Kūkai, the monk who shaped Japanese Buddhism.

In this meditative documentary, filmmaker Shiho Kataoka captures the stories of four contemporary pilgrims, each burdened, in different ways, by exhaustion, solitude, or quiet disillusionment. Beautifully filmed in the serene landscapes and temples of Shikoku, ARUKU is an intimate view into their spiritual journeys and personal motives. As the road stretches through serene landscapes and moments of unexpected human connection, walking itself becomes a form of listening: to others, to the self, and to the possibility of living more fully.

Starring:
Hiroe Nagai, Li Kai, Shoji Takaoka, Junki Yamada, Mukoh Miyama

The story follows Aoto and Yoko, two people who once shared first love in middle school who cross paths again many years later. Aoto is divorced and returns to his hometown, settling into a new job and a quiet routine. Yoko, who has lost her husband, now supports herself with part-time jobs. Both now living alone and shaped by the ups and downs of life, they quickly reconnect and begin gently filling in the long gap since their school days. As their feelings rekindle naturally, they eventually begin to speak about a future together. But fate may have other ideas.

Adapted from Kasumi Asakura’s award-winning novel, it is a delicate and quietly devastating portrayal of cautious emotion, hope and second chances.

Starring:
Masato Sakai, Haruka Igawa

Set in 2003, Sham follows elementary school teacher Seiichi, who is accused by Ritsuko, the mother of one of his students, of brutal corporal punishment. Sensing a scandal, a reporter publishes the accusations under Seiichi’s real name, and the explosive story sends shockwaves across the country. As the media descends, Seiichi becomes the target of relentless public condemnation, personal betrayal, and professional ruin. Public opinion overwhelmingly sides with Ritsuko, and an extraordinary legal force is assembled for a civil trial unlike any seen before. Yet when Seiichi finally takes the stand, he rejects every accusation, insisting that the entire case was fabricated.

Based on a true story, Master Director Miike’s Sham is a gripping and deeply affecting courtroom drama. Both unsettling and unexpectedly compassionate, it is anchored by powerhouse performances from Go Ayano and Kou Shibasaki.

.
Set against the sweeping landscapes of Kagoshima, this lyrical coming-of-age drama follows the emotional struggles and renewal of a 17-year-old high school baseball player. Aspiring professional player Gaku endures the harsh, militaristic discipline of his baseball team while grappling with strained relationships and mounting pressures. Encouraged by his gentle homeroom teacher and reunited with a childhood friend, he begins to rediscover memories of freedom and joy found in nature. As the seasons change, Gaku gradually finds healing, resilience, and a renewed sense of self.

A magnificent and haunting coming-of-age drama about conformity and the pressures of competition, the beauty of nature and the passing of time. The unique style is reminiscent of Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life. Conceived over a ten-year period, this cinematic tone poem is an achingly beautiful meditation on youth, innocence and the nature of mindfulness.

Starring:
Machuri Saigo, Konosuke Furuya, Natsuka Ogawa

Screening Information:
- Sunday, June 21 at 7:00 pm
- In Japanese with English subtitles.
- No exchanges or refunds.

Misora, harbors a secret she can never reveal to anyone: she can hear the voices of the dead. Her life changes when Urushibara, a seasoned funeral planner, recognizes her unusual ability and invites her become an intern. She is moved by her mentor’s deep sincerity and unwavering compassion toward both the departed and their families and asks herself how she can use her uncanny gifts to create the perfect funeral: a ceremony that satisfies not only the bereaved, but the deceased as well.

Based on the bestselling novel by Amane Nagatsuki the film combines fantasy elements with the Japanese traditional funeral practices explored in the Academy Award winning Departures. Thoughtful, humane and deeply moving.
