Reel Ideas at brings storytellers, artists, and industry voices together to share how the work gets made, the risks that push stories forward, and the ideas that challenge what audiences expect.

With the personal story behind ’s opening night film BA’S BOOK, a case study on filmmakers building for a vertical frame, a cinematographer career panel, a conversation on accessibility best practices for the screen industry, a live table read bringing an original series to life, music video worldbuilding, and five Pitch! finalists pitching live, this is where the industry breaks down the work.

Each session puts you in the room with people doing the work right now, with insight and connections you can bring straight into your own projects.

Ian Bawa’s STRONG SON follows Harvinder, a former bodybuilder now caring for his aging father. Exploring the complicated bond between father and son, this film offers a moving portrait of two men learning that strength can also mean being vulnerable, changing, and letting others in.

Bawa’s short film of the same name (which screened at Reel Asian in 2021) has now been expanded into his feature debut, continuing a body of work that explores family, masculinity, and mental health.

Sat, Nov 14 at 3:30PM

⭐️Ashley Duong’s BA’S BOOK kicks off as this year’s Opening Night Presentation, inventively using film to reimagine the lives of family members from multiple perspectives, opening windows onto the past, and finding peace for the future.

Duong and her reluctant father venture to Vietnam to meet with family to re-enact and challenge scenes from his memoir, revealing past joys and scars while giving voice to those he left behind. Duong approaches these intergenerational conversations with tenderness, humour, and care, as well as rigorous determination.
