KK’S PRIEST AND W.A.S.P.: A GREAT NIGHT OF HEAVY METAL AND FAMILIAR FACES
Review and photos by Marcel Allan Rubia
Some nights are about more than what happens onstage. Seeing so many musicians from Toronto and Southern Ontario in attendance, and running into so many people I knew, made this one feel like a gathering of the scene.
And onstage, KK’s Priest gave us plenty to talk about.
KK’s guitar playing was stunning. He was the standout for me alongside Ripper Owens, whose vocals sounded amazing. With the whole band playing so tightly, their mix of Judas Priest classics and KK’s Priest originals came across with real power. They came out flying, and the crowd around me was rocking out and loving it.
It was my first time seeing W.A.S.P., and they put on a great show too. Blackie Lawless and the theatrical stage presentation made an impression. From where I stood, though, the sound seemed a little muffled at times, especially during sections where I thought I could hear backing tracks. I can’t confirm what was being used—that was simply how it sounded to me in the room.
For me, KK’s Priest had the edge. KK’s guitar work, Ripper’s voice, and the tightness of the entire band made theirs the standout performance.
But the evening as a whole was a great one: two bands worth seeing, an enthusiastic crowd, and plenty of familiar faces from our own music community. The conversations and chance encounters were as much a part of the night as the music.
