Join us for an in-person walkthrough of Proof 32, featuring artists Tommy Keith, Dion Smith-Dokkie, Parumveer Walia, Long Xi Vlessing. Proof is Gallery 44’s annual exhibition of work by emerging Canadian artists that reflects a range of current concerns and practices in contemporary lens-based media. Proof is often one of the first exhibitions in a professional context for an emerging artist.

Opening Reception to follow from 6:00-8:00PM.

Dion Smith-Dokkie’s work oscillates around intermedia image practice, post-representational cartography, translation and morphology as a practice of escapist, sentimental formalism.

Long Xi Vlessing’s evolving practice centres diaristic photography in exploring intimacy and the lived-in body, the shared humanity of strangers, and quotidian scenes as sites of personal and collective transformation.

Parumveer Walia is an artist whose practice extends image-making into video, installation, and object-based forms, drawing on expanded media and q***r aesthetics.

Tommy Keith photographs people and places close to where he lives, and often returns to the same areas over extended periods of time.

Zaynab Ghaïs-Mortada is a self-taught artist who works primarily with photographic objects and has led research on gendered Islamophobia and epistemic violence in Québec.

After They Leave, an exhibition by Manny Wood Lynes-Ford, will be on view in the Vitrines from June 5 - July 4, 2026.

Opening Reception: Friday, June 5, 6:00 — 8:00PM

Documenting Wells, British Columbia, a historic mining and logging town on the territories of the Lhtako Dene and Secwépemc peoples, After They Leave is a testament to what happens when the relationship between humans and the land is forgotten. Lynes-Ford documents the scars left behind from the process of extraction, abandonment and the displacement of Indigenous peoples who lived in reciprocity with this land.

This exhibition will be featured in imagineNATIVE’s Art Crawl on June 4, 5:00 - 10:00PM.

Presented in partnership with imagineNATIVE.

Manny Wood Lynes-Ford is an indigenous photographer from Gitxaala, British Columbia, based in Toronto. He specializes in analog photography with a range of media from cyanotypes to chromogenic prints in the darkroom. He holds a BFA from OCAD University in photography. Working with themes of decolonization and the Indigenous experience, he draws inspiration from artists such as Fred Herzog and Carl Beam.

Cute Paranoias, an exhibition in the Vitrines from Jake Santos closes this Saturday, May 23!

Based on the subject of aerial photography, Cute Paranoias compares the nature of Western masculinity and speculative thinking, in reference to the phenomena of crop circles, notions of truth and the inherent territoriality effect of fear mongering. Santos examines the response of territorialism in the West as a product of speculative truth in information media. Using irony to analyze the tone of conspiratorial anxieties, Cute Paranoias emphasizes documentary photography as a speculative practice and interrogates its impact on the public.

Jake Santos is a Toronto-based artist, working primarily in Airbrush painting. With an interest in the seduction of images, his work mimics the nature of photography with the subject of digital images as an intersection between painting. Through a non-contact material process, the effect of fantasy materialises in trying to keep the image at a distance. He studies currently at OCAD University, in the Drawing and painting program (2022-2026). He has had solo shows at Blouin Division, Toronto (2025, 2026). Group shows in Toronto, at Abbozzo Gallery (2025), Hunt Gallery (2026). Exhibited in Artist-Run Galleries Hearth (2025), Xpace Cultural Centre (2025). Internationally exhibited at Art fair SWAB Barcelona with Abbozzo Gallery (2025) and locally at Art Toronto (2025) and Artist Project (2025).

TIW ‘Best in Show’ Award
Toronto Image Works is generously awarding Anthony Gebrehiwot $500 in production support at TIW.

Anthony Gebrehiwot is a multiple award winning visual artist, photographer and community leader whose creative lens re-visions photography as an ongoing dialogue of social change between subject and society.

His artistic exploration stems from his work with Black/pan-African diaspora communities in Toronto. As the former resident photographer at R.I.S.E. Edutainment (Reaching Intelligent Souls Everywhere), Gebrehiwot has intimately witnessed and documented the creative and unguarded evolutions of poets, musicians, and artists from across the city. Based in Scarborough, Gebrehiwot has worked to bring photography to youth in communities through organizations like the NIA Centre, The Power Plant, The Doris McCarthy Gallery and the Art Gallery of York University. His connection to youth and community, combined with his sustained self-dissection and constant desire to evolve, helped him to identify black identities as a focal topic for photographic inquiry.

Gallery 44 Emerging Artist Award
Gallery 44 is awarding Cruz a G44 membership and production credit for the continued support of their artistic practices.

Cruz is a first-generation Filipino artist based in Mississauga and Toronto, whose work explores vulnerability, intimacy, loss and self-discovery. While photography is their primary medium, they often merge both analog and digital processes, as well as poetry, to explore the intricate realm of human emotion. Cruz aims to connect with the core of what makes us human, striving to capture and express the essence of the human experience, focusing on reinterpreting imagery by altering its perception, presenting it in unconventional ways that challenge its typical role and purpose.
