something about the Argentina vs Spain final just felt… strange.

I’m not saying the match was fixed. I’m simply sharing some of the things that many fans online have been discussing, because, as someone who’s watched football since 2007, I can’t shake the feeling that something didn’t add up.

Some of the things people have pointed out include:

• ESPN’s broadcast reportedly showed Argentina’s players arriving at the stadium smiling and relaxed. But after returning from the dressing room, Lisandro Martínez appeared unusually serious, while Enzo Fernández looked emotional. Fans have interpreted those moments in different ways.

• During the match, Argentina looked nothing like the team that had impressed throughout the tournament. They struggled to create chances and finished without a single shot on target. For a team with that much attacking quality, that surprised many people.

• Messi’s pre-match speech also caught attention. Rather than delivering an emotional “let’s win this” message, he reportedly focused on telling the players “forget everything else guys, let’s just play. Forget about everything.” This is very unlike Messi or any captains pre game speech before a World Cup final.

• Old interviews with Kylian Mbappé have praised Messi’s unbelievable finishing in training, saying he rarely misses when aiming for a spot. Because of that, some fans were surprised by videos circulating online that appear to show Messi missing several chances during the final training session. That is a RARE sight.

• There are also internet claims that a children’s publication predicted an Argentina vs Spain final with Spain’s number 7 scoring the winner. The book was released right before the World Cup started.

• From a business perspective, some people argue that football’s biggest marketing story would be a symbolic passing of the torch from Messi to the next global superstar - Lamine Yamal. That’s an interesting discussion about sports marketing to think about.

None of these points, individually or together, prove that the match was fixed. Football has produced shocking finals before. Great teams have off days. Players look emotional for countless reasons. Social media also has a habit of connecting unrelated events into one narrative.

But I won’t lie.

Watching Argentina fail to register a single shot on target felt surreal. Watching Messi sitting quietly after the match, staring into the distance, was heartbreaking.

I’ve been watching football since 2007. I genuinely hope all of this is just fans overanalyzing a painful defeat.

Because if football is ever manipulated to benefit corporate interests, broadcasters, or marketing narratives, then that’s a tragedy far bigger than losing a World Cup final.

And if one day credible evidence ever showed that this final was scripted, then I’d also have to question everything else, including Argentina’s journey through the tournament. I sincerely hope that never happens.

I don’t want to experience the same feeling I had as a kid when I found out WWE was scripted.

For now, these are just discussions and observations, not facts.

no logic

As an Argentina fan, I have to be honest.

If we’re being completely logical, Argentina probably shouldn’t beat England.

The defense has looked shaky throughout the knockout stage. We haven’t kept a single clean sheet. Emil Martínez hasn’t looked anywhere near the unbeatable version we saw in Qatar 2022. Every knockout match has felt like a battle rather than a statement.

Now look at England.

Harry Kane is coming off the greatest goalscoring season of his career. Jude Bellingham has become the definition of a big-game player. Gordon, Stones, Rice… most of their core is right in their prime. On paper, it’s a more balanced squad.

If football were played on spreadsheets, England should probably win.

But here’s the problem with using logic against Argentina. More specifically, against Leo Messi.

Logic said no football great would win more than 3 balon d’ors. Messi won it 8 times.

Logic says playmakers sacrifice goals and goalscorers sacrifice creativity. Messi retired from Europe with over 850 career goals while also becoming the player with the most official assists in football history.

Logic said Messi would never win an international trophy after losing major finals while being in his prime (2008-2021).

He won the Copa América. And then the World Cup.

Logic said he couldn’t dominate a World Cup in his mid-30s.

He won the Golden Ball.

Logic says once you leave Europe’s top leagues, you’re finished at the highest level.

He’s leading the World Cup in goals again at 39.

At some point, you stop asking what is logical.

Because when Lionel Messi wears the Argentina shirt, football has a habit of ignoring logic.

That’s why, despite every weakness this team has…

Despite England looking stronger on paper…

Despite every prediction…

We still believe.

Not because it makes sense.

Because we’ve seen No. 10 make the impossible look normal too many times.

The longest 72 hours of this World Cup begin now.

We’ll find out soon enough whether logic wins…

Or whether Messi writes another chapter that nobody thought was possible.
