Inspired by the power of punk, psychedelia, the dynamics of post-hardcore, the extent of noise rock and the weirdness of post-punk: Montreal’s generates its own sound and offers loud rock, using shredded riffs and angular rhythms.

PEI post-punk trio Absolute Losers blend their pop songs with wiry guitar work, intricate bass and drum arrangements, and effortlessly cool vocals.

Their debut album, “At The Mall” (2023) is a danceable 12-track offering that confronts hardships without taking itself too seriously. In their latest efforts, Absolute Losers shed the camouflage and proudly bear their knack for catchy melodies, soaring harmonies, and straight-to-point pop songwriting.

Catch them opening for Surf Hat Lee's Palace on Oct 2.

What started as a joke between friends on a beach in Tofino has gradually snowballed into something real. In 2022, a loose pact was made: start something new, don’t overthink it, and write catchy songs that feel relatable and genuine.

Based in the mountain town of Squamish, British Columbia, Surf Hat have been crafting their own version of cold-water surf rock — beach music written somewhere between the ocean and the mountains. Their sound floats somewhere between breezy shimmer of Allah-Las and the off-kilter quirkiness of Talking Heads.

Roger Clark Miller was the guitarist/vocalist/co-leader in the highly influential post-punk band Mission of Burma. Their album “Vs.” was number 24 in Rolling Stone’s “100 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time”, and they have a chapter dedicated to them in the Indie Rock Bible “Our Band Could be Your Life.”

RCM’s new album, “The Green Man”, due late summer 2026 on Don Giovanni Records, sees him returning to slightly more traditional songwriting. As a solo singer/songwriter, the lyrics are prominent, supported by his unique guitar stylings. Minimal loops create the illusion of more than one player on-stage, and give him room to explore the guitar in ways that only he can. Residual post-punk collides with psychedelia and a use of words that is not run of the mill.

Serving as a spiritual continuation of the now-defunct Sprain, exhibits the reunion of a now decade-old collaborative force between guitarists Alexander Kent and Sylvie Simmmons. A subsequent recruiting of percussionist Andrew Chanover, bassist Wesley Nelson, and Keyboardist Elizabeth Carver filled out their orchestrally-minded roster. Their brazen debut ‘Mo********er, I am Both: “Amen” and “Hallelujah”…’ retains Sprain’s characteristic commitment to intensity, further mutated through a newfound lens of collagist approach. Featuring only a single, hour-plus long song, Mo********er is a demanding exhibition of uncompromising ethos. Shearling’s aggressive live performances and meticulous recordings demonstrate an ambition, audacity, and emotional vulnerability that few contemporary bands can parallel.

MARY is the darkwave and post-punk project of Toronto-based artist Kuba Rygal. Marrying the angular melodies and bubbling basslines of classic goth with a modern, atmospheric urgency, MARY delivers a hurricane of chiming guitars, razor-sharp synths, and anthemic choruses. Following the critically acclaimed 2020 debut Die Before Death, MARY is returning to the stage to unleash their highly anticipated sophomore album, Hopeless in Venus.

“In structuring the album around pregnant pauses and hushed single-instrument lines, Green-House realigns their sound away from easy listening and back toward a vision of active communion in shared space… spend time with these songs, and small wonders—a chime, a beep, a grainy but unmistakably maternal “you”—continue to surface like new blooms on a lovingly tended vine.” -
