Day 5 of our French tour began with a morning journey to the sun-soaked, rolling landscapes of Marseille. After an hour long bus ride, the TASSO crew arrived in the vibrant port city, where we had some free time to explore. Whether wandering through bustling streets, taking in the rich blend of coastal culture, or simply enjoying a stroll along the harbour, everyone found their own way to soak up the energy of Marseille.

We then regrouped for a relaxed seaside lunch right on the beach with a panoramic view of the Mediterranean stretching endlessly before us. The gentle sound of waves and the salty breeze set the perfect scene for a moment of calm. But the afternoon quickly turned playful as we stayed by the water for some much-needed free time: swimming in the clear blue sea, tossing frisbees, and splashing in the sun. It was a joyful break from our usual schedule, filled with laughter, sunshine, and shared moments that made the day feel extra special.

By late afternoon, we returned to the hotel to freshen up and rest before the night ahead. Dinner was a cozy two-course meal that recharged us for what was to come. Soon after, we suited up in our concert uniforms and boarded the bus for Sanary sur Mer, where we performed our second concert of the tour.
The setting was magical Sanary’s charm, mixed with the sea breeze and golden-hour light, created an atmosphere unlike any other. We played for an hour and a half to a warm, enthusiastic audience whose energy mirrored our own. There was something about that evening the rhythm of the waves just beyond the stage, the buzz of a crowd, the connection in the music that made it unforgettable.

Back at the hotel, the celebration continued. It was Anna’s birthday, one of our amazing band managers and a constant source of support throughout the tour. The group gathered to celebrate her with heartfelt cheers, cake, and music. As the night wore on and the clock struck midnight, we seamlessly transitioned into three more birthdays Anna’s daughter Emily, along with Max, and Luke, all band members. The celebration rolled into the early hours with laughter, sweet treats, and that joyful sense of community that defines this group. It was a perfect end to a day that was not only filled with beautiful sights and meaningful performance but also shared joy, connection, and celebration.

After a delicious breakfast shared with the band at the hotel, TASSO gathered their instruments, energy, and excitement for a memorable day in Aix-en Provence a picturesque town known for its charming streets, elegant boutiques, and sunlit cafés. Once they arrived and stored their belongings, the musicians had some well earned free time to wander. Some ducked into local shops, others sipped iced drinks at sidewalk cafés, and a few simply strolled through the cobbled streets, soaking in the town’s relaxed Provençal vibe.
The group reunited for a classic French three course lunch, thoughtfully prepared to fuel everyone for the big performance ahead. The meal was both satisfying and leisurely perfectly French and gave everyone a chance to catch their breath before the afternoon unfolded.
Following lunch, the band enjoyed a bit more time to explore. Some circled back to a favourite shop, while others found small keepsakes or postcards to mark the day. But soon, it was time to get down to business. Aix-en Provence boasts a stunning main boulevard, wide and lined with tall plane trees, bustling with locals and tourists alike. At one end of the street lies an open square that, for one evening, became TASSO’s open air stage.
Dressed in their concert attire, the musicians sprang into action, working together to set up the steelpans under the late afternoon sun. To keep things light and relaxed, the group rotated through setup duties while enjoying an impromptu urban picnic on the square’s grassy edges. Even during sound check, curious onlookers began to gather drawn by the bright glint of the pans and the infectious rhythm of early notes. By the time early evening settled in, a sizeable crowd had formed.

The junior ensemble kicked off the concert with undeniable energy, delivering crowd-pleasers like Blurred Lines, Black Magic Woman, and a stirring rendition of Hallelujah. Their dynamic performance quickly won over the audience and set the bar high. Then came the senior musicians, who met the moment with confidence and flair, rolling through a vibrant setlist that had the square alive with movement. By the end of the night, people were dancing freely in the street and even formed a spontaneous conga line, winding joyfully through the crowd.

The infectious energy between the performers and the audience turned the performance into a true celebration. As the last notes echoed off the buildings and the applause faded, the band packed up swiftly and efficiently adrenaline still humming through their veins. But as soon as the pans were loaded into the truck and everyone boarded the bus, exhaustion finally caught up. The musicians fell asleep almost instantly, satisfied after a long, beautiful day of music, movement, and memory making in the South of France.

Today was jam packed, it started off normal and slowly turned more chaotic as the day went on.

We woke up bright and early at 6:30am because we had a train to catch! It’s travel day, which means we are moving locations. Since this is the first time travelling with both junior and senior bands, we are a large group with a LOT of luggage. We are headed to Avignon for some sightseeing, a historical tour, and to eventually arrive at our new hotel closer to the south of France where we will perform a few times.

Our group of 100+ people arrived at Gare de Lyon train station and shortly afterwards we all managed to safely embark on the high speed rail. No luggage missing and no one left behind. It’s safe to say we filled the majority of suitcase space in each train car…

We took a quick bus ride to Avignon, a town in the South of France known as the home for French popes in the 13th century! After our busy travel morning, we worked up quite an appetite. In our groups we wandered the quaint, historic town to find lunch. Some musicians stumbled upon a beautifully decorated merry go round and decided to hop on for a ride.

We hydrated and nourished ourselves before joining a guided tour of the Palais des Papes - Avignon’s main attraction. It was a beautiful cathedral inside and out. We learned so much about the town’s history and took many pictures. Did you know the French popes at the time lived at this palace because of a civil war happening in Italy?

Our guided tour ended with singing a French song “Sur le pont, d’Avignon” and dancing in a circle on the Pont Saint Bénézet bridge. An old, broken but historical bridge is situated over the sparkling Rhône river.

Although we’ve crossed the country and explored a new city, the day was not even close to ending.

We arrived at the new hotel in La Seyne sur Mer. Checking in over 100 people (including two coach drivers, two truck drivers, and our logistics team) is no simple task - it takes time and patience. Once that was completed we headed straight to the dining room for a delicious meal. The choices were: salmon or chicken. Both were extremely tasty.

There is never a moment on TASSO trips where there isn’t something happening in the background. As musicians and parents were finishing their meals, a few senior members already began unwrapping the instruments. This is a long process because we take extra precaution when shipping the pans. It was 11:30pm and we finally set up the pans in the dining room for a quick rehearsal. The junior group practiced first and went to bed at 12:00am while the senior group practice after and packed the trucks. You cannot rush packing! The pans need to be handled carefully because they were just tuned in Toronto. With the help of one of our chaperones monsieur Rick, we were able to get all the pans in the two trucks at 2:00am. At last, we are ready for our first performance tomorrow, and it was finally bedtime.

Peace. See you in the next leg 💪

Toronto All Stars Steel Orchestra Day 2 in Paris 🇫🇷
July 01, 2025
Yesterday marked the exciting start of TASSO’s Paris adventure. After a long flight, the group landed at the airport around 1 p.m., buzzing with anticipation. As they gathered their luggage and got their first real taste of Parisian air, they were welcomed not just by the city, but by familiar faces as well. At the airport, the group reunited with several members of their extended TASSO family Kabir’s family, Misha’s family, Luka’s family, Tess’s family, and Evangeline’s family who had arrived separately to join the experience. The joyful reunions added warmth and excitement to the day, setting the tone for the trip ahead.

With everyone accounted for, the group boarded a comfortable coach bus and made their way through the city toward their first hotel. The drive offered everyone their first glimpses of Paris, with its charming architecture, bustling streets, and elegant cityscape. Once at the hotel, they were greeted with a welcoming lunch of warm ham and traditional French sides, followed by a luscious chocolate mousse that felt like a true Parisian treat.

As the group settled in, they were delighted to meet Aleyah and Isadora, who were already traveling through Europe and joined the group at the hotel. Their stories from earlier parts of their journey added to the sense of shared adventure and made the reunion all the more special. A little later in the afternoon, Quinn and Ben arrived as well, having spent some time in Paris earlier that day before meeting up with the rest of the group. By now, the entire TASSO cohort was complete, and the energy in the hotel was full of excitement, laughter, and hugs.

After some time to relax, unpack, and freshen up in their rooms, the group reassembled and headed out once again for dinner at a local restaurant, where a hearty plate of spaghetti served as the evening’s main course. The casual, cozy setting gave everyone time to reconnect, share stories, and enjoy a taste of home with a Parisian twist.

The evening continued with a scenic bus tour through the glittering streets of Paris. As the sun set and the city lit up, the group marvelled at iconic sights from the comfort of their seats. The highlight of the night was a stop at the Eiffel Tower, where everyone stepped off the bus to take photos and enjoy the awe-inspiring view of the monument lit up against the night sky a magical moment for first timers and returning visitors alike.

Finally, after a packed day of traveling, reuniting, dining, and exploring, the group returned to the hotel, tired but happy. Everyone headed to bed, resting up for the early morning ahead and the many adventures still to come in the days that follow.

DAY 1: Wheels Up! ✈️🎵✨

Before our journey began, the instruments had to make their way over to France. A few days before the flight, a group of dedicated students gathered in the band room to pack up the pans. Each instrument was wrapped carefully for extra protection. Once everything was ready to go, the pans were delivered to Air Canada Cargo, where they made sure each instrument and piece of equipment was loaded securely for international travel. Once they were on their way, it finally started to feel like our tour was beginning.

A few days later, it was our turn to head to France. We filtered into Toronto Pearson Airport dressed in our red travel uniforms, instantly recognizable in the crowds 🇨🇦🌟. Before we headed through security, some families took opportunities to snap photos, others were saying emotional goodbyes, and many were just excited to reconnect with friends.

Our flight to Paris was about 7.5 hours. Once we boarded, most people settled in quickly. It didn’t take long for the cabin to quiet down to a mix of sleeping heads and glowing screens. For most of us, this was a chance to rest before the full days ahead.

We landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport early in the morning. After collecting our luggage, we met up with the rest of the TASSO team (the musicians who had flown ahead a few days earlier). We were excited to see the full group to come together for the first time on French soil. With everyone now reunited, and the instruments already in France, we were finally ready to begin TASSO’s Tour de France 🇫🇷💫 🎶.

Tasso at Tour d’Aigues Last night, as the sun slipped behind the hills of Luberon, we played beneath golden skies and centuries-old stone. The château glowed. The air was warm. And The Phantom of the Opera found a new kind of echo—carried not just by voice, but by steel.Performing in the historic ruins of Tour d’Aigues wasn’t just a backdrop—it was a partner. Every note we played felt like it belonged to the place, as if the walls had been waiting for this moment. This is what we live for at Tasso. Music, memory, and the power of setting.Thank you for hearing us, feeling us, and letting us haunt the night—beautifully.
