Character dance is an important part of a well-rounded ballet education, especially for dancers who are considering pursuing ballet professionally.
At Bayview School of Ballet, Character Dance takes place Wednesdays from 8:30–9:30 PM, giving students the opportunity to develop skills that extend beyond classical ballet technique.
Character dance is featured in many of the world’s most well-known classical ballets, including Swan Lake, The Nutcracker, Giselle, Don Quixote, and Coppélia. Dancers may encounter character work in professional company repertoire, auditions, and performances, making familiarity with the style a valuable part of their training.
Through character dance, students develop musicality, coordination, strength, performance quality, and a greater understanding of the different styles and traditions that have shaped classical ballet.
For dancers with their sights set on professional ballet, character dance is more than an additional class. It is an important part of becoming a versatile and prepared performer.
