At Because She Cares, we promote storytelling as a vehicle to speak through silences, including the silences surrounding Canada’s residential schools and its colonial legacies. A short film that speaks through these silences is Holly Fortier’s, “A Mother’s Voice”, a personal perspective of residential schools as told by a mother to her daughter. Holly recommends that every Canadian go on a “truth-finding mission” where we learn about the impacts and legacies of residential schools from the stories of Indigenous peoples. Reconciliation may be a national project, but it starts with each of us doing our part.

What have been the real experiences of African, Caribbean, and Black women working in the field? We spoke to Lori Chambers about Because She Cares, an arts-based research project showcased at the International AIDS Conference.”

In 2021, Canada officially designated August 1st as Emancipation Day, marking the day in 1834 when slavery was abolished across the British Empire. But our fight for Black women’s equity persists in Canada. So as you celebrate our emancipation, remember that the fight continues. We cannot be silent!

At the Global Village (GVE039), AIDS 2022 will host an exhibition that places a special emphasis on the experiences of BIPOC people living with HIV.

This interactive environment, which was originally created by the late activist Derek Yee, offers a spatial time capsule in which the visitor is urged to pause, reflect, and experience what it could be like to live as a Black, Indigenous, or racialized person living with HIV.
