Our Story

Artscape Daniels Launchpad has been developed over a period of 10 years through extensive research and consultation with artists and creators, governments and creative industry and educational experts.

Why we created Artscape Daniels Launchpad

Artscape has a long history of making space for creativity and transforming communities and a keen interest in understanding the conditions necessary for creative people to thrive. In exploring the Launchpad project, our research revealed that it is becoming harder and harder to make a living as an artist or designer in Canada. These people are twice as likely to have a post-secondary education, but incomes range 20% – 57% below the average of Canadians. They are four times more likely to be self-employed. We found that there was a general lack of support for creators to build their business acumen and the programs that are most effective are the least available. There is an especially difficult road from post-secondary to self-employment for recent graduates who lose access to the equipment and technology upon graduation.
