Matting is having a moment.
For years, the mat was often the quiet part of a frame, a neutral border designed to let the artwork do all the talking. But lately, we’re seeing it become part of the design itself.
Colour. Oversized proportions. Tiny, unexpected openings. Off-centre placement. Multiple images within one expansive mat. These choices can completely change the personality of a piece and of an entire wall.
We’re loving this more playful approach to custom framing, especially when different matting styles are brought together on a gallery wall.

Small photographs. Big mats. Unexpected proportions.

✨ Custom framing isn’t just about choosing a frame. It’s about designing everything inside it.

This beautiful home is proof that the smallest details often have the biggest impact. Every room has been thoughtfully considered, beautifully curated, and designed with intention. We were honoured to create the custom gallery wall as part of that vision.

For this installation, we intentionally played with:
• oversized mat borders
• offset photo placement
• unexpected mat proportions
• rich coloured mats
• mixed wood and black frames
• black and white photography

Sometimes the most beautiful part of a framed piece isn’t the photograph—it’s the negative space surrounding it.
By offsetting photographs, changing mat proportions, and introducing colour, family photos become more than memories—they become art.
It’s these subtle design decisions that transform a gallery wall into something truly custom.

Head over heels in love with this pair! đź’•đź’•
These Georgie Wilson prints are 30 x 30 and we added a 4 inch mat and a gorgeous light oak frame.
What makes them extra special is that we used Art Glass. It ensures little-to-no glare (and UV protection) and allows you to focus on the art and not be distracted by the glare on the glass. It’s an upgrade and does cost extra but worth EVERY PENNY!
