🤯 That’s a wrap!! We would like to personally thank everyone who came to support our exhibition “Cuties Who Are Nice” for its duration. Last nights closing reception was absolutely fantastic, featuring lots of snacks and our signature, Cutie Cocktail.

This is the Memer 🤪 aka Holly (.m.chang). She never knows how to pose in photos so robot is always the default. When she’s trying not to act like a robot she’s probably ears deep in readings because she’s in the middle of an MA studying communication and culture. She is one of the many cuties who had the amazing opportunity to work on this show!

The Magenta Curatorial Cuties had the privilege of learning from ‘Darianne,’ Dario and Marianne, in collaboration with The Magenta Foundation and creating The Incubator Curatorial Summer Workcamp. During the workcamp, we learned from their experience on what it took to create/manage our own gallery spaces. We went on multiple gallery and studio trips while experiencing first hand what we felt worked and didn’t work.

Marianne has been our mentor and mother of galleries this whole journey and we are so thankful to have learned from her experience as a curator. As well as Dario and his magical words which made everything sound amazing on print!

All wrapped up and ready for installation! These bad boys (and many more) are officially installed and ready to go! Cuties Who Are Nice *OFFICIALLY*
OPENS TOMORROW!! (Oct 4th from 1-6pm) See you there! (86 Miller St.)

Many have asked us, “What does, ‘Cuties Who Are Nice’ mean”? “What is your quirky-titled exhibition about?”
Welcome! We are a group of emerging artists with diverse backgrounds who have come together to explore, discuss and curate! Through discussion, the group had come to understand and appreciate certain qualities in our practice(s) that we valued and wanted to bring forth during the creation of our own exhibition. Thus, the Curatorial Cuties wanted to bring forth some of the main goals of The Magenta Foundation and them our exhibition around inclusivity and kindness. After many discussions, studio and gallery visits and portfolio reviews, we had our hearts set on these specific four artists. .hudspith .soldovieri each with their own unique practices, working together in unison for this exhibition. We hope you come by during our opening hours or closing reception.

Ellen Bleiwas’ sculptural practice takes an interest in space, slowness, sensory perception and the body. By drawing upon material and form to create heightened relationships between sensorial bodily experience and psychological state. She is driven by her desire to enable foundational experience and provoke reflection on the nature of the self.
//
Bleiwas immediately drew us in with her openness about her practice and genuine interest of our individual perspectives on her work. This visit helped us to continue the journey towards curating our own artistic identity, while we searched and discussed perspective collaborators for our show.

Pictured above are some of Laura Hudspith’s newest creations that will be shown in our upcoming October Exhibition, “Cuties Who Are Nice”; unpoppable bubble wrap, sinking in on itself, realistic latex papaya slices constrained in fishnets. Together, these objects create a larger body of work, ‘Body Double’ (2019), referencing Hudspith’s experience with a recently developed autoimmune disorder, which often causes her inexplicable and incurable pains throughout her body.

Walking into Hudspith’s studio for the first time, our team was able to see where Hudspith’s latex sculptures, quirky knick-knacks, and acrylic creations come to life.
//
Laura is a ‘Cutie’ who utilizes fruits and her body in creating still lifes. Distorting her shapes with textures and colours, Laura’s artwork targets the dichotomy of pain, focusing on how it affects the identity of femininity and sexuality.
//
Closing Reception: 7pm to 10pm on October 10th 2019
Gallery Hours: 1 to 6pm on the 4th, 5th, 9th, and 10th of October @ KONTORT, 86 Miller Street

Utilizing mediums such as photography, film and sculpture, Luca Soldovieri’s works intertwine family history, the value of objects and navigating how to cope with inherited forms of pain.

What drew our team of curators to Soldovieri’s work most, is her sincerity and openness with her own intimate dialogue within her familial surroundings. Soldovieri interferes with various physical materials that illustrate time and physicality in a unique way. In Soldovieri’s body of work, ‘The Weight of Being,’ she utilized objects of sentimental value passed down to herself by her father. This included bullets and small army men made of lead, which were collected by her grandfather during his experience in the Second World War. Soldovieri took these objects, placed them on a scale and recorded their weight, and then proceeded to melt the lead to create metric cubes at the exact weight of the original object, reducing these objects to a unit of value that we can assess and understand.
//
We hope you enjoy viewing her work as much as we do. See it in person October 4th, 5th & 9th from 1-6pm. Closing reception on October 10th, from 7-10pm.
