Sketch Republic…that’s a wrap!

On Tuesdays, students worked with Sam over the course of the year exploring character development, sculpture and drawing techniques, based on the expressed interests of the six involved. The small group dynamic allowed for flexibility and the freedom to tailor curriculum, while offering skills development in an array of media, to which was met with great enthusiasm from the participants.

If you have a kid who loves art, we are offering private lessons and small group art experiences (by request) over the summer. Link in bio.

Or check out Creative Uncommon-a unique art and culinary camp which starts up in early July.

What Did You Do at School Today?

LITERACY
Lyceum’s Summer Read Recommendations

While stories are threaded through everything we teach at The Lyceum, I have a particular fondness for Friday morning’s novel study class. Using narrative to activate discussions about philosophy, history, drama and the art of literature we spend three hours each week deep-diving into ideas generated by the lecture topics. Students are learning vital skills in critical reflection and long form essay writing. This year, we explored short fiction form representing each decade of the twentieth century followed by Macbeth and To Kill a Mockingbird. These kids inhabited the stories they read and I am utterly charmed every time they make a reference to a character or event from a novel as though it is a real thing (and to them it is). We are in a time where lowered expectations and unmanageable class sizes, in combination with digital distraction, are leading to downward trends in EQAO scores. We need to keep kids reading!

So I chose ten books from our novel study library and told them they could pick one to read over the summer. Most of them chose several. When we return in September, they will be asked to lead the discussion about that book and I will select our first novel assignment from their “pitch”. In case you want to read along, here is our list:

All the Light You Cannot See - Anthony Doerr
Watership Down-Richard Adams
Heart of Darkness-Joseph Conrad
The Lost World-Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
Animal Farm-George Orwell
Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH-Robert C O’Brien
Flowers for Algernon-Daniel Keyes
*Lord of the Flies-William Golding

Feel free to read along with us!

*Interesting sidebar: the young person pictured here is on her 45th reading of Lord of the Flies. She says every time she reads it, she sees something new in it.

The Last Supper

Lyceum students really rose to the occasion yesterday. With humour and hard work, they delivered a spectacular dinner for their parents in the gallery. A game-themed menu designed by Sam Higgs included dishes that showcased their studies on food history following The Columbian Exchange and their studies in the kitchen this year. Many gave up their weekend time to ensure the intricate dishes arrived perfectly executed and served with panache.

PUPPETRY

Oh! The Places You’ll Go
With special guest Jamie Shannon of Puppet Island

Students were introduced to the incredible work Jamie does in his studio at Gibraltar Point during their visit there. Yesterday, Jamie devoted a day to conduct a puppet making workshop in our studio. In just a couple of hours, out of a pile of wire, fun fur, upholstery foam, fibrefill and googly eyes arose the magical Cave Beast. Come out to our theatrical interpretation of Dr. Seuss’ Oh! The Places You’ll Go, staged with an array of puppets and marionettes handcrafted by Lyceum students.
Shows on Thursday June 11th at 4.30, 5.30 and 6.30
969 Queen St West
Guaranteed to transport people of all ages into the wonderful and wacky world of Dr. Seuss!

What Did You Do at School Today?

BOTANY

Students wrote their final Botany exam, surveying all form and function of plants. Plant specimens support lab work to make connections to life. The classroom work in Botany is connected to our newly established planter boxes outside the school and tenancy in the Garrison community garden. The bounty of this arrives on our plates at lunch and gives rise to discussions about food systems, food security and migration. This will all culminate in The Last Supper on Sunday. Dinner for the parents in the gallery will feature presentations of dishes and presentations of work done on the Columbian Exchange.

The latest bad news for students in Ontario:

In a statement Thursday, the TDSB said it has made the “difficult decision” to close the outdoor education centre at Warren Park, end the leases at the Forest Valley and Etobicoke locations and end programming at two in-school sites, the Toronto Urban Studies Centre and Island Natural Science School. CBC News, May 14, 2026

“With mounting evidence showing nature’s ability to buffer developing brains from stress, improve concentration, and boost confidence, it’s clear that increasing access to natural spaces can be an important tool for improving the mental health of children.” UNature.org

$6.4B cuts to education over the past eight years mean:
49% of Grade 6 students are failing math. 289 elementary teachers have been cut from classrooms. Class size caps for Grades 4–8 have been removed. All teacher collective agreements expire in August of this year.

We Can Do This Differently.

Our programs are rooted in a century of proven Montessori theory. We don’t follow political trends. We follow the child. While student satisfaction drops elsewhere, our students are becoming joyful, enquiry-based citizens of the world.

Is it possible?

At our schools, the “impossible” happens every day. Here’s a snapshot:
-3-year-olds mastering the decimal system.
-Grade 3s fluently dividing fractions.
-9-year-olds becoming published poets.
-Grade 6s debating resolutions in the UN General Assembly.
-12-year-olds generating electricity from plants.
-18 year old former students enter university on scholarships.

Book a tour at one of our schools today to see our students in action:
The Orchard Montessori: ages 2-9 years
The Orchard Lyceum: ages 9-14
