ABOUT CONTACT IMPROV: Contact Improvisation (CI) is a partner/solo/group-improvised dance style developed in 1972 by Steve Paxton and Nancy Stark Smith, heavily influenced by Aikido and Modern dance. Due to the open-ended nature of the dance, each new dancer can add to this pot of creativity. This has lead to various influences weaving in and out of the form. Some of those influences include but are not limited to Tango, Zen, Zouk, Contemporary, Ballet, Hip Hop, Qi Gong, Capoeira, Ballroom, Salsa and the list goes on. This is the beauty of CI: it can offer such an open fertile ground for exploration in expression and movement. Your voice in this dance is what will drive the creative freedom possible at Colours in Contact.

Looks like another rainy Sunday is headed our way 🌧️

So instead of hiding out at home, come get cozy with us at the Dovercourt House 🤸‍♀️ Rainy Sundays in that big beautiful space are honestly kind of a vibe, with a little movement, a little play, a little community, and a nice excuse to reset.

We’ll be there from 3-5 pm, then we’ll wander somewhere nearby for some food, chats, and a slow little wind-down together 🍲✨

Come move with us. Rain and all 💜

➡️ Your people aren’t afraid to question the usual way of doing things ⬅️

We challenge patterns and structure, and can help you reconnect with your own voice along the way. You’ll mess up, you’ll get scared, you’ll face old ways, but every day that we move and get together, we get to connect more deeply to our joy, broaden possibilities, lean on community and approach life in new ways.

💫 Here’s a little glimpse into our creative process while preparing for a class xo

This Wednesday, we’re going to play with something new 🌊

We’re diving into new aspects of momentum - exploring how we can keep a dance moving, build speed, and create big, sweeping pathways across the floor.

Think: expansive movement, playful momentum, counterbalance, and finding ways to keep the dance flowing while one person becomes a source of stability. We’ll explore circular patterns that create these beautiful sweeping sensations, as well as more linear movement where we play with speed, continuation and momentum.

And the fun part? There are SO many ways to combine these elements and create your own movement pathways within the framework 🤸‍♀️

Whether you’re newer to contact improv or you’ve been dancing with us for a while, there will be lots to explore! New movers can find accessible ways into the material, while experienced movers can take these ideas into new territories.

We’re anticipating lots of movement across the studio within the class and during the jam afterwards 😄

Come play, experiment, move big, and see where the momentum takes you 🌀

What if moving differently could change the way you live? ✨

Contact Improvisation is a partnered movement practice where we explore connection, communication, balance, momentum, and improvisation.

But for us, it’s about more than movement.

It’s a chance to step outside your usual patterns.

To listen more closely.
To become more curious.
To adapt to what’s actually happening.
To let go of needing to get it “right.”
To discover what becomes possible when you trust yourself, your body, and the people you’re moving with.

We believe these are skills that can reach far beyond the dance floor.

Contact Improv Foundations is a 5-week introduction to the practice - a welcoming space to explore movement, play, connection, and new ways of being.

You don’t need to be a dancer.
You don’t need to be flexible.
You don’t need to know what you’re doing.

Just come ready to explore.

5 weeks of movement, play, connection & curiosity 🤩
