For Fabián Ugalde (Fabián Ugalde) art history is not a fixed archive, but a continuous source of reinterpretation 🥀

Drawing from Louis Janmot’s Fleur des champs (1845), Ugalde introduces digital fragmentation into the original composition, bringing a 19th-century Romantic painting into dialogue with contemporary visual culture.

His approach goes beyond visual transformation. By shifting the familiar image between clarity and abstraction, Ugalde explores how historical masterpieces continue to evolve through reproduction, technology and changing ways of seeing. What remains recognizable is just as important as what disappears.

•••

Across Peter Reuterberg’s (PETER REUTERBERG SCULPTOR) bronze sculptures, imagination is never an escape from reality. It is another way of constructing identity.

In Unicorn Girl, Peter Reuterberg pairs wings and a horn with a firmly crossed-arm stance, giving the figure an almost stubbornly human presence. The fantastical elements do not make her feel distant; they make her personality more immediate.

Sharkboy approaches transformation differently. With flippers, goggles and a fin strapped to the body, the figure seems caught in the act of becoming someone else: part play, part performance, part private mythology.

📍Now on view at GLR Toronto

•••

A stamp is built to travel. In Joe Curtis’s (Joe Curtis) work, it also travels through time 💌

The London-based artist transforms the familiar postage stamp into a reflection on changing cultural codes, relationships and connection. Drawing from cinema and popular culture, Curtis pairs iconic imagery with witty, often unexpected titles; turning familiar scenes into new narratives.

Self-taught, Curtis first gained attention with his sold-out London debut, The Good Old Dates. His stamp series has since evolved into a visual chronology of popular culture, balancing nostalgia with a distinctly contemporary point of view.

•••

The Good Old Dates, présentée à guichets fermés.

🎥 Spotted in transit: Michelle Pfeiffer’s Catwoman emerges through layers of graffiti, collage and found imagery in new works by Montréal-born Stikki Peaches (stikki_peaches), now making their way to GLR Montréal!

Stikki’s practice grew out of the street, mixing punk culture, fashion and the icons he grew up with into densely layered compositions. The son of a tailor, he began creatively in fashion; an influence that remains visible in his instinct for cutting, assembling and reworking existing material.

From Montréal streets to walls in Paris, London, Berlin and New York, his work has always blurred the line between pop culture and fine art.

New works arriving soon at GLR Montréal!

•••

What can a carved figure reveal beyond its surface?

In Mirror Minds, Christian () and Matthias Verginer (Verginer Matthias) treat the human body less as a subject than a starting point. Christian introduces elements of the natural world that make his figures feel caught somewhere between reality and fable. Matthias disrupts the surface itself; carving, drawing and layering materials to suggest thoughts that remain inaccessible to the viewer.

📍 Final week to visit Mirror Minds at GLR41 | Montréal, through October 8!

•••

Before Ognian Zekoff painted the human figure, he studied rhythm.

Born in Pleven, Bulgaria, Zekoff (Ognian Zekoff) trained as a pianist before turning to the visual arts, later studying painting in Sofia. That early relationship with music still runs through his work: repetition, pauses, control, and carefully measured movement.

Working from classical traditions of drawing and chiaroscuro, Zekoff strips the figure back to light, shadow, and gesture. In his ballet works, discipline and weightlessness exist side by side: the body becoming almost an architecture of movement.

•••

Jean Paul Riopelle turned uncertainty into a method: emerging from Montréal’s Automatist circle, he moved beyond gestural abstraction toward what he called “total chance,” allowing the work to reveal itself through the act of making rather than conform to a predetermined image.

Nature remained central throughout his practice, not simply as subject, but as a system of rhythm, movement and transformation. Across painting, printmaking, collage and sculpture, Riopelle worked at the threshold between abstraction and recognition, where landscape, animal and sign could emerge briefly, then dissolve again.

•••

Suite Lac aux Puants, 1972 strips that tension down to black line. The monumental lithograph was exhibited that same year in Riopelle: Ficelles et autres jeux at the Musée d’Art moderne de Paris and is documented in Yseult Riopelle’s Catalogue raisonné des estampes. Its knots, loops and crossings connect to Riopelle’s fascination with string-game structures—where a few lines can suddenly suggest an animal, landscape or figure depending on how we look.
