Arnie Lipsey Art

Arnie Lipsey Art Original art by artist Arnie Lipsey, Toronto Canada. I'm a full-time acrylic artist. I use archival family photographs as a point of departure.

His paintings often use archival family photographs as a point of departure for this inquiry of underlying intergenerational dynamics and the psychological legacies that link generations. My paintings explore identity, family history and the relationship between the personal and the universal. Commission inquiries are welcomed! Do you have your own family photos and family history that you would like to weave into a painting?

24" x 36"

Commissioned artwork. The client came to me after seeing my recent work, with the hope of creating something deeply personal for his family. He had a collection of old family photographs and wanted a painting that could honor that history—something that would carry both memory and meaning.
I was immediately drawn to the images. There was so much unspoken story in them. From there, we spent time sharing ideas, working through sketches, and making revisions until the piece felt right.
The painting touches on themes that have long been present in my work: displacement, the lasting shadow of war, and the possibility of redemption, healing, and resilience. These are stories that continue to resonate, both personally and universally.
In the end, I feel we created something honest and deeply felt—something that respects the past while still holding space for hope. He was very happy with the result, and so was I.

I'm pleased to announce that many of my paintings are now available as high-quality prints.

There are a number of options available: archival-quality prints in various sizes, with optional framing if you'd prefer something ready to hang.  Our printing partner Pictorem also provides FREE shipping to both the USA and Canada.

For those inclined toward the slightly unexpected, a few images are also available as jigsaw puzzles(!) Perhaps a novel way to inspire an inquiry into family history!

New work:

In the Valley of Dry Bones
36” x 36”
Acrylic on canvas

This latest piece is based on a formal photograph taken at a VERY formal family wedding; the kind that just doesn’t happen anymore. A great deal of pomp, ceremony and tuxedoes. This portrait of three brothers is set against an interior of the Great Synagogue of Orli. The building was ransacked but (miraculously) not destroyed, and today stands as a silent witness to what was once a thriving Jewish Shtetl in far Eastern Poland. The title refers to a passage in Ezekial 37. (Yes, I’m going all Biblical on Y’all). And so, this painting is (obliquely) about redemption and rebirth. That’s an ongoing theme of mine: what’s lost, and what’s regained.

New Painting:

"Adrift"

36" x 36"
Acrylic on canvas

Is there any feeling more devastating for a child than abandonment? The physical hardships that follow may be difficult to endure, but the deeper and more lasting wound is the emotional one -- the sense of being rejected. Unprotected, and left on one's own...

New work:

“Ghosted”

48” x 36”
Acrylic on canvas

Drobin, Poland, circa 1924

My Dad’s family on the eve of his brother Yossel’s emigration to Canada. In the end, three (including my Dad), would make it to this country. The rest would stay behind. This painting reflects the intimate bond I feel for relatives I never met, and the negative space they’ve taken in my psyche. A simultaneous, and continued, presence and absence.

New painting!

Trinity
36" x 24"
Acrylic on canvas

Source photo circa 1964. Cote St. Luc, Montreal.
We grew up with the Bomb, out of sight but not out of mind. These days, the dangers are different, but in a way more unnerving.
