We are so excited for “Dru - Digital Storytelling and Archiving” to exhibit at Whippersnapper Gallery from October 9 to October 11. 

This exhibition showcases works that were created by Tibetan youth who participated in “འབྲུ་ - Digital Storytelling and Archiving,” a 2-month long summer arts intensive created by Made in Exile, a community arts organization based in Toronto, Canada, dedicated to supporting Tibetan youth navigating exile hood. 

འབྲུ་  Dru is the Tibetan word for seed. Our hope is this program has planted the seeds for a new generation of youth born in exile to practice agency in their own documentation and storytelling. 

Works in this exhibition were created by Tenzin Desal Amji, Jordhen Nyanang, Lakedhen Nyanang, Tenzing Yengsel, Tenzin Norgyal, Tenzin Migmar, Tenzin Tsungmey and Tsepella.

We gathered on 17th september 2026 at Gallery 1313 for the reception of the Digital Storytelling + Archiving Program, a Summer Art Intensive by Made in Exile, created in collaboration with the Tibet Museum.
It was a beautiful evening filled with art, stories, conversations, and community. 💙🎨

We were grateful to welcome the crowd, including the parents and loved ones of our participating artists, who came to witness and celebrate the work they created throughout the program.

Over the course of the program, our young artists explored the many ways stories can be collected, preserved, and shared. Through photography, videography, sound recording, and digital storytelling, they reflected on identity, memory, migration, culture, and what it means to carry a story with you.

The reception was also a special moment of recognition for our artists. Each participant received a certificate celebrating their completion of the program, presented by Alexa Gilmore, MPP for Parkdale–High Park. Having their dedication and creative journey recognized in front of their families, friends, and community made the moment even more meaningful.

Beyond the artwork on the walls, the evening was a celebration of the people behind the stories , the artists who shared their perspectives, the families who supported them, the mentors and facilitators who guided them, and everyone who continues to create spaces for Tibetan voices and stories to be heard.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us at Gallery 1313 and helped make this reception such a meaningful closing celebration. Most importantly, congratulations to all of our artists. 🎓🫶

Step into the world of traditional weaving and learn from the knowledge and experience of two incredible women from our community, each bringing decades of experience with this craft.

In this hands-on workshop, our facilitators will introduce you to the weaving process, share their techniques and stories, and demonstrate how a loom is used. Participants will have the opportunity to try the loom themselves, taking turns and learning directly from the facilitators.

This will be our last workshop of this year! We are excited to see you here! ✨

A colder day outside made for a cozy afternoon of painting as we gathered for another Made in Exile Arts Workshop Series. 🍂✨

This time, we explored watercolour through floral motifs inspired by traditional Tibetan thangka art. 🪷 Participants began by drawing their own designs before learning how to build them up with colour and detail, with guidance from our facilitator throughout the process.

The workshop also took us beyond the painting itself. Participants were introduced to the traditional Tibetan techniques used to prepare the canvas and had the opportunity to paint on canvas made using these methods. It was a chance to learn more about the materials and processes that are part of Tibetan artistic practice.

From the first sketches to the final details, it was great to see everyone develop their paintings in their own way. The room was filled with concentration, conversations, and lots of experimenting with colour!
A big thank you to our facilitator Tee for sharing their knowledge and to everyone who joined us and spent the afternoon creating with us.

We’re excited to keep bringing different art forms, techniques, and creative experiences to our community through the Made in Exile Arts Workshop Series.

Weekend of July 26th:
Celebrating our last weekend of our 2026 SAI program ✨

For week #4 on Sunday we had our final and most active workshop. Tashi Gyatso gave us a demo using GarageBand and showed us how you can create music wherever you go, with whatever you have. Excitedly, our participants created their own short audios and shared them with each other. 🎧

The workshop will involve learning about watercolour techniques that draw from traditional Tibetan painting. You will also paint on canvas created using age-old Tibetan techniques while being introduced to the intricate skills of canvas-making.

Weekend of July 25th:
Celebrating our last weekend of our 2026 SAI program ✨

For week #4 of our arts intensive we got inspired! We reflected on our artistic styles and purpose at museums and in the studio.

On Saturday we got outside to visit places where art lives in our Toronto community. We went to the Museum of Contemporary Art MOCA Toronto to explore the combinations of mediums and stylistic choices, as our participants curated their taste. This amusing trip prompted a group reflection on style, taste, significance, symbolism, stories, and technical feats.

Join us on September 17th, 2026 at 6:30pm for the reception of the opening of “འབྲུ་ - Digital Storytelling and Archiving”

The exhibition showcases works that were created by Tibetan youth who participated in “འབྲུ་ - Digital Storytelling and Archiving,” a 2-month long summer arts intensive created by Made in Exile. Through workshops led by local artists, our young creatives explored the media of photography, sound design and videography to engage in the practice of archiving and storytelling.
འབྲུ་ Dru is the Tibetan word for seed and we hope this program and the works that have come out of it plant the seeds for a new generation of youth born in exile to practice agency in their own documentation and storytelling.

Made in Exile is a grassroots community arts organization based in Parkdale delivering 10 years of free and accessible arts programming for Tibetan youth navigating exilehood through diverse arts media.

Works in this exhibition were created by Tenzin Desal Amji, Jordhen Nyanang, Lakedhen Nyanang, Tenzing Yengsel, Tenzin Norgyal, Tenzin Migmar, Tenzin Tsungmey, and Tsepella.
