Socialization is a broad process for your new puppy and is perhaps one of the most important things you can do to raise a confident, resilient, adult dog. Ultimately, effective socialization builds your dog's ability to be emotionally regulated, NEUTRAL, in either exciting, or scary, situations. Done effectively & correctly, the world around your dog is really "no big deal", and most things just become 'white noise' in the background. It's better termed, 'exposure training' as the process is about allowing your puppy carefully planned 'exposure' to things he will experience in his life with you.
Your puppy's 'Primary Socialization Period' is from about 3 weeks - 16/18 weeks of age. That means, your breeder will have hopefully done a few weeks of intentionally exposing your puppy to a variety of sights, sounds, surfaces, and smells in a positive, structured way. If your puppy (or dog) is a stray or a rescue, or from a less than qualified breeding source, you may not know what their earliest socialization experiences have been so far, if any.
When your puppy comes home with you at around 8-10 weeks of age, you should begin to continue with well-planned social experiences, to help build the confidence, calm, and resiliency characteristics you want in your adult dog. It is also very important to know that while early socialization is super important between 8 weeks to 16/18 weeks of age, it is not over when your puppy is around 4 months of age. As puppies enter 'fear stages' somewhere around 5 months of age, you'll want to continuing being intentional about socializing your puppy for at least 18-24 months. Maintain his social experiences throughout his life with you to build lifelong, appropriate behaviors.
