Well, this evening’s Payadora Tango Ensemble concert was simply fabulous! An audience member wrote “So dynamic, entertaining, professional, funny etc. They were everything!!!
They could not get over the hospitality that they have experienced in Thunder Bay!”

It was really great to welcome back Payadora’s double bass player Joe Phillips back to Thunder Bay! He was the TBSO’s principal bass player for some time, and used to play on occasion for Consortium Aurora Borealis too!

They were busy selling and signing CDs after the concert.

Here’s the Payadora Tango Ensemble at their afternoon rehearsal today in St. Paul’s United Church, 349 Waverley St., Thunder Bay! We hope you’ll come out to hear them tonight. 7:30 pm. At the door: $25; $15 students, 11 & under free. There’s lots of room for everyone since the church seats 700 to 750, and seating is unreserved!

All who know Mark Camilleri, Payadora Tango Ensemble’s pianist, theatre music director, and orchestrator with a 35-year career spanning concert halls, film scoring, and the stages of Broadway and Mirvish Productions, are aware that for him, music is life. As a composer, arranger, accompanist, engineer, producer, conductor, contractor, and recording studio owner as well, Mark has encountered nothing but great success. He directed many world premieres. As an orchestrator/arranger, many of his works have been played and recorded by symphony orchestras and theatre companies around the world. Mark was also a featured pianist at the Pan-Am Games cultural concert and has toured as a Concert Artist for Yamaha Canada. Come and hear him in action! Sat. Payadora Tango Ensemble’s musician of extraordinary range, Drew Jurecka, bandoneon, violin, mandolin (2nd from left), has won a Grammy award as a producer, performs worldwide on several instruments, has appeared on hundreds of albums and soundtracks, orchestrates and composes, and has written and arranged for albums and live performances by ensembles internationally. He is married to Payadora’s leader/violinist Rebekah Wolkstein. Originally trained as a classical violinist at the Cleveland Institute of Music, he returned to Toronto to play with legendary guitarist Jeff Healey. A staple of the Canadian music scene, he performs and tours regularly with the Venuti String Quartet, Payadora, Schmaltz & Pepper, and the Drew Jurecka Trio. Sat. Rebekah Wolkstein, Payadora Tango Ensemble’s founder and leader, is a passionate chamber musician and a multi-award winning creative force in the Canadian music scene, a violinist, vocalist, songwriter, and composer. Described as “indisputably a Grand Master of her craft, an outstanding virtuoso musician” and “a very clever lyricist,” Rebekah has established a strong international presence. She writes tango that reached #1 on Europe’s the World Music Charts, and Yiddish swing songs that Opera Ramblings says are “loads of fun to listen to even when sober.” Come hear her in action in “Tangomania!”, Sat.
