AFCASA will be running a "black love" inspired movie night from 7pm to 10pm. We will be watching 2 to 3 movies. Valentine's Day doesn't have to be a day for couples only; make it a self care night or a night to hang out with your friends and come enjoy yourself. AFCASA will also be sending out a promo code  for all those who attend the movie night to get $5 off their dominoes pizza order that night and it’s easier applied when done over the phone. Here’s some information about the Virtual Paint Night which will be holding on February 12th from 6pm to 8pm. This event is inspired by the poem by the late Maya Angelou, "Still I Rise". It is a poem about staying above the hate and above the underestimation or opinions of ones character. The painting for that night is inspired by this poem as well. The event is $25.00 per person. This fee includes the supply of the art kit needed for the painting and the canvas. All you have to do is fill out the google form (link in bio), pay, click the zoom link that will be provided on the day and show up. The deadline to register for this event is on Wednesday, February 3rd at 11:59pm. Please fill the google form out with as much detail as possible. If you have a friend who would like to participate in this event, they need to be an AFCASA member. Friday June 5th, 2020 was a historical day for Thunder Bay. On this day, Thunder Bay citizen gathered together to protest the mistreat of black and indigenous lives happening all around the world. This day was filled with rain, sunshine, empowerment and tears that can all be felt through these powerful pictures. Born in Charles County, Maryland, in 1866. Matthew Henson was an African-American explorer best known as the co-discoverer of the North Pole with Robert Edwin Peary in 1909. After his discovery of the artic He recorded his Arctic memoirs in 1912, in the book A Negro Explorer at the North Pole. In 1937, a 70-year-old Henson finally received the acknowledgment he deserved: The highly regarded Explorers Club in New York accepted him as an honorary member. In 1944 he and the other members of the expedition were awarded a Congressional Medal. It is said that him and his fellow indigenous explorers were the first people to discover the artic, but Robert Peary took credit for their work

Jean-Jacques Dessalines honoured as one of the founding fathers of Haiti, he was second in command under during the Haitian Revolution, he led the insurgents in declaring Haitian independence on January 1, 1804. Dessalines appeared to be siding with the French, but the move was nothing more than a ruse designed to trick the French into trusting Dessalines so that he could regroup the insurgents and continue the fight for independence. It was successful. When Dessalines proclaimed Saint Dominque’s independence, he chose the name Haiti for his country, the name used by the island’s aboriginal inhabitants. Jean-Jacques Dessalines is featured on the 250 Gourdes bank note marking the Bicentennial of Independence of Haiti.

Chinua Achebe is a Nigerian novelist acclaimed for his unsentimental depictions of the social and psychological disorientation accompanying the imposition of Western customs and values upon traditional African society. His particular concern was with emergent Africa at its moments of crisis; his novels range in subject matter from the first contact of an African village with the white man to the educated African’s attempt to create a firm moral order out of the changing values in a large city. He made a splash with the publication of his first novel, Things Fall Apart, the story of a traditional warrior hero who is unable to adapt to changing conditions in the early days of British rule in 1958. Renowned as one of the seminal works of African literature, it has since sold more than 20 million copies and been translated into more than 50 languages.

Katherine G. Johnson (known as the “human computer”) made the most of limited educational opportunities for African Americans graduating from college at age 18. She began working in aeronautics as a "computer" in 1952, and after the formation of NASA, she performed the calculations that sent astronauts into orbit in the early 1960s and to the moon in 1969. Johnson was honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 and saw her story brought to light through a book and a feature film called “Hidden Figures” the following year. Katherine Johnson unfortunately passed away on February, 24th 2020 at the age of 101. May her legacy live on forever. ✊🏾✨
