👩‍🎨✏️👨‍🎨

Last month, I was welcomed to to collaborate on a community arts project.

The project was developed for all 300 primary students of the school and we rolled it out over 2 days of non-stop Art Days.

I wanted to create something that allowed for layers of art processes, used multiple tools + fostered an independence of our young artist voices.

Students were asked "What Makes a Hurricane?", the Elsie mascot. We reflected on what it means to be connected in our school community and how to define that with words.

Students were so excited to share so many positive qualities. After a quick printmaking process of the Elsie emblem, the students chose a final word to express what makes a Hurricane to place in a banner. They each added their personal artistic flair to the design + we walked through how to make their art into a sticker.

The final part of the project asked the students if they wanted to keep their sticker or donate it to a larger community art piece. The donated stickers were compiled in a final showcase + displayed for the entire school community. When the showcase period ended, the donated stickers were taken down and use once more to reflect to the school community what it means to be a "Hurricane" as they were given away at the end of a school day.

I want to extend my thanks and gratitude to the School Council of Elsie MacGill, the staff and teachers for welcoming the chaos of this project. My teammate and I were so grateful for everyone who embraced this moment. And thanks Judy for always being awesome!!

Art Matters.
