“See with eyes unclouded by hate.” — Princess Mononoke
I had the opportunity to create this piece for my local library for Every Child Matters. Being trusted to create something for such an important day means a lot to me, especially knowing it will be shared in a space where children, families, and our community come together.
Every Child Matters is about remembering the children who never made it home, honouring Survivors, and recognizing the generations who continue to carry the impacts of residential schools.
Recent events in Kamloops are also a painful reminder that the hatred and racism our people have endured are not confined to the past. In moments like these, it is important that we continue to stand together, tell our stories, and take up the space our people fought for us to have.
We have come so far, and we’re still here.
Resilience has always been woven into our nature. It lives in our languages, our cultures, our art, our families, and in the ways we continue to carry our knowledge forward. Despite everything that was meant to erase us, generations before us made sure there would still be something for us to carry today.
Creating this piece is my small way of contributing to that continuation through art, remembrance, and making space for our children to see themselves and their cultures represented.
For the children who never came home.
For the Survivors who made sure we could be here.
For those still healing.
And for the generations who will carry us forward.
We remember. We continue. We’re still here.
Every Child Matters. 🧡
