We're excited to welcome Scottish smallpipes phenom Brìghde Chaimbeul to the Maritimes as part of her Canadian summer tour. Chaimbeul rose to prominence as a prodigy of traditional music, but has since taken smallpipes into uncharted territory. A fearless artist continuing the living traditions of old music in profound new ways. Her journey includes two shows on mainland Nova Scotia, two stops on Unama’ki Cape Breton to celebrate Lùnasa and a finale in the marshes of New Brunswick for Sappyfest.

We’re opening our spring exhibition Sa’se’wamukwa’sit, Changes by visiting artist Alex Balkam in Gallery 203 next Friday, April 24.

Join us for a public gallery hour that evening from 7–8pm. Artist will be present. Free and open to all.

Alex Balkam is a visual and media artist based in So’qmkiknuk, Mi’kma’ki (Shelburne, NS). Working across oil painting, sculpture, tanning, and film, his practice moves through questions of place, being, and the natural world. His short films have been shown at festivals across Canada, and his work is held in the Nova Scotia Art Bank.

Sa'se'wamukwa'sit is a Mi'kmaw word meaning to change appearance, to transform. The natural world has always changed. It is changing now, under pressures of our making. These works watch closely, and ask what transformation requires of us.

✨ Public gallery hour: Friday, April 24, 7–8pm, Gallery 203. Free and open to all ✨

Arts and culture organizations across Unama’ki, Cape Breton Island, are facing over $530,000 in public funding cuts this year alone.

So, we’re doing something about it, as an act of solidarity as community and across the Island, a collective response to what’s at risk, while continuing to advocate for the support this work requires.

Thirteen organizations, including Eltuek, have come together in a shared 50/50.

The jackpot is already at $5,000, and the first draw is April 23, 2026. One winner takes half in each draw.

Music. Language. Art. Story. Culture, and the joy and truth it brings. The spaces that hold it, feed it, with you, together. 💗
