CBU Boardmore Theatre

CBU Boardmore Theatre The Boardmore Playhouse is a 337 seat venue & the Creative Campus hub of Cape Breton University. Liz and Harry Boardmore came Sydney in 1966.

They did not waste any time setting bold and imaginative goals for drama here. In their first year, they sought out talent within both the college and community to produce Arthur Miller's THE CRUCIBLE which was staged for two nights at Sydney's Vogue Theatre before capacity audiences. Cape Bretoners came to the Vogue as if starved for live theatre. This began the tradition of both college and comm

unity cooperation in drama, a relationship that has reaped cultural benefits for all of us. The Playhouse opened in 1979 and in 1990 it was renamed the Boardmore Playhouse in honour of Elizabeth and Harry Boardmore who, for more than twenty five years, dedicated themselves to the teaching and development of community theatre in Cape Breton. The Playhouse is a 337 seat venue which is the centre for the performing arts at Cape Breton University. The Playhouse is home to Boardmore Theatre, which presents an annual season of plays, including plays for young audiences, four to five full length plays, a bi-annual Shakespeare production and a bi-annual Broadway Musical, and a one week one act play festival with an emphasis on new play development. Throughout the school year and summer months the CBU Boardmore Playhouse is also involved with a number of community projects. The Playhouse provides practical expertise to community theatre groups in the form of workshops for young people as well as advise and leadership in summer theatre programs. The Playhouse is also home to many of the academic courses offered as part of CBU's Theatre Arts Certificate Program. This program offers courses in Acting, Movement, Voice, Directing, Playwriting, Theatre for Children, Stage Management, and Stage Craft. Students can easily combine Theatre Arts Certificate courses with their three or four year BA degree program.

From our friends at HEIST

“HEIST is coming to Sydney, Cape Breton for one night only with their award-winning critically acclaimed production of The Princess Show. Saturday, August 1st at the Eltuek Arts Centre!

The Princess Show is HEIST’s original fully lip synched live-action anime drag musical extravaganza. This wonderfully weird show was created by Aaron Collier, Richie Wilcox, and Deonie Hudson in 2016 and the work premiered with Theatre Outré in Lethbridge, Alberta. The founders of HEIST (Aaron Colliier & Richie Wilcox) perform as their beloved characters Princess Edward and Abel T. Suckizone in this quest to surmount depression in a dystopian fantasy world. Princess Edward’s battle with her inner demons is made literal in this fable in which a strange and soothing beast kidnaps her lover Abel and holds him in a disconnected trance. Will Princess rise to the challenge of radical self love to save her beloved? As one reviewer put it, “the show is a great, big, visually striking celebration of q***r identity and learning to love yourself.”

You can find more info about the show and multiple show trailers on our website or by going to https://www.liveheist.com/princess-show”
