Murder-on-the-Lake, Shaw Festival, Preview #1, Guest Detective: Francis, PhD Candidate in Art History

Francis and his lovely fiancé, Kim turned heads in the lobby of the Royal George Theatre - both of them dressed in their summer linens & creams. Kim purchased tickets to MOTL as a birthday gift for Francis, and she said after the show that she had a feeling he was going to be chosen! Francis was a fantastic "first detective" for us to get our feet wet with an audience. He had an easy, relaxed & playful manner about him and got as many laughs with his off-the-cuff observations as did the cast. He was wonderful at insinuating himself in the group of suspects, and managed to uncover several key bits of information in Act One. In Act Two, he really came into his own when he took over, installing himself in an armchair stage right and conducting an extremely methodical interrogation of each character. Francis was great at snooping for physical clues, and giggled every time he found something of note. His final arrests were both simple & gentle, and initiated with a soft spoken, "We'll be putting the cuffs on this person, please."

Stay tuned for more Spontaneous Theatre write-ups as we head into the run of the WORLD PREMIER of Murder-on-the-Lake at the Shaw Festival, July 26 to Oct.4, 2025

I wonder...do ticket buyers need coaching in their confirmation emails?

"Thank you for your purchase.

We invite you to join us on an isalnd of calm, a digitial oasis, a meditation on the present moment:

There are NO CELL PHONES, NO PHOTOGRAPHY, NO RECORDING, and NO FOOD allowed in the theatre, during the performance. These things are extremely distracting to the actors, and your fellow patrons.

Photos and recording without express permission violate the Union Rules that our actors adhere to.

Brightly lit screens, flashing Fit Bits, texting, updating social media - all of these things pull you out of the present moment.

If you're going to put on hard pants, leave your house, buy a ticket and sit in a dark theatre with other humans - dare to be present. Breathe. Listen. Respond. Feel the energy in the space around you. 7 hours of Netflix just cannot compare!

Eat before or after the show.

Thank you. "

Our WHY:

Last night during Goblin:Macbeth, we came to a moment of very simple audience participation. We're talking a bit of group biz...but the gentleman standing right next to me just sat there not participating. Normally I wouldn't say anything but for some reason, perhaps because he was making direct eye contact with me while not participating, I engaged. "You too, soldier!", I said. He said, "no, no" When I asked him why not, he replied, "because I'm old". (!!!). "Ah! But, I am talking to the six year old inside you! The one who wants to play. We're here to remind you how good it feels to play!"

And, he leaned forward & said, rather quietly, "I've been this way for 65 years."

And perhaps a bit of Goblin Magic came through, as I suggested, "Even the smallest toot on your tiny, invisible trumpet will have you feeling ten years younger.:

He lifted his hand, put his thumb in his mouth, and TOOT!!!!

Just one.
So tiny.

And the audience erupted into cheers & applause for him!

He smiled.

That's WHY.
