The NSO is announcing today the departure of Hugh Donnan as Chief Executive Officer.

“It has been an extraordinary privilege to serve the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra and to work alongside so many talented musicians, staff, volunteers, partners and supporters,” said Donnan. “I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished together and excited about what lies ahead for the organization.”

The concert opens with individual moments for each member of the Atlantic String Quartet, with a set of solo works that exhibit their unique musical personalities. Nancy Case-Oates, violin will be joined by Jenny Griffioen, harpsichord for Sonata in C min Op.1, No. 5 by Jean Baptiste SenaillĂ©. Nathan Cook, cello will play from Paul Hindemith’s Sonata for solo cello, Op.25, No. 3. Heather Kao, violin plays John Corigliano’s The Red Violin Caprices. Kate Read, viola is performing the ECMA award winning composition Blackwood Sketches for viola and electronics by local composer Andrew Staniland.

In the second half, they come together for Ludwig Van Beethoven’s String Quartet in A major, Op. 18, No. 5, a piece full of charm, quick turns, and a sense of conversation you only really get from Beethoven at his most playful.
