DAVID BLACKWOOD RCA, "Fragment - Ephraim Kelloway's Door" (2015-2021), encaustic and gold leaf on pine wood assemblage, 31 x 24 x 2 in.
"Over the past thirty years, the image of this door with its folk-art elements has become an iconic vehicle of expression for the artist: a motif deeply symbolic of Newfoundland's history and culture. Originally used as the standard template on which to focus his 'researches' in painting, it has evolved into the microcosm of Blackwood's Newfoundland - his attempt to create a history of that world in a single object. Observers have tried to appreciate the door in terms of its unfolding uses: as a memorial stele to the artist's neighbour, Ephraim Kelloway; a folk art Ouija board; a magical talisman; a palimpsest of the artist's own experience; a portal to the Underworld. His extended meditations on this single object in all its various guises have given it an accumulated depth of meaning that is utterly unique in contemporary Canadian art." ~ Ken Forsyth, 'Revelation Catalogue' p. 15, 2014.
"Home" celebrates the extraordinary and masterful work of one of Canada’s best known printmakers, David Blackwood. This exhibition features etchings and unique works spanning six decades of the artist’s career.
