On September 30, 2026, ArtsNL will be closed in recognition of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
For this day, we considered writing a message about the history of residential schools and colonialism in Newfoundland and Labrador, their lasting effects on Indigenous individuals and communities, and the ways they have and continue to shape society and the arts. But we recognize that these are not our stories to tell. Instead, we want to share this:
Through our work, we see how colonialism and policies of assimilation continue to affect Indigenous communities and artists in the province. These effects can show up in many ways, including limited Indigenous representation in programming, barriers to accessing resources, and the extra work Indigenous communities face to pass on artistic, cultural and traditional knowledge, practices and teachings. For some artists, the cost of living and accessing materials leave little to no room to experiment. If an idea doesn’t work out, they may not be able to afford the materials to try again. These are just some of the ways the past continues to shape society today.
We want to take a moment to speak directly to our Indigenous artists and communities.
We see all of this because of you—Indigenous community members who have lived these realities and generously shared your knowledge and experiences with us. To the Indigenous artists, arts workers, community outreach individuals, representatives of Indigenous governments, teachers, Elders, event organizers, industry professionals, advocates, and community members who have shared with us: you help us better understand how colonialism, residential schools, and past and present inequities continue to affect Indigenous lives, communities, and the arts.
What you share helps improve programs and assessment processes, identify and address barriers in our applications, shape policy, and plan events. It helps us make better-informed choices and consider where our own actions could cause harm.
We recognize the time and energy it takes to share these experiences and insights. Educating us is not your responsibility, and we do not take what you have shared for granted. We are grateful for the time and trust you have given us. It is our responsibility to learn from what you share and act on it. We will keep working to do better.
Sincerely,
ArtsNL
