Memorial University - Conference and Event Services

- When all of Newfoundland and Labrador is abuzz about Netflix' 'Below' (shot in part at Memorial's Ocean Sciences Centre doncha know!) it was fun that Memorial's Employee & Retiree breakfast took place in the company of another, nicer, great leviathan at the Core Sciences Facility.

In this case, Altum was above rather than below. From start to finish, hundreds of Memorial staff from multitude departments and units enjoyed breakfast rather than being breakfast!

It was bright and beautiful, and good to connect while taking in the breakfast sandwiches, and conversation.

- Summer is spectacular on the Hill! Earlier this week it was quite the delight to have a film crew working from Emera Innovation Exchange. It was amazing to watch (and that's just the filming, not the show!) Talk about abuzz with activity - the parking lot transformed to a community of trucks and trailers, with dozens of people doing so many busy things. And it was oddly quiet - especially during the "ROLLING" call! What a treat to have them - looking forward to seeing EIX on the screen!

Conference and Event Services & Strat Ops had good Team Time - outside, in the sun, in the wind, in the weeds with pitchforks and shovels!

- It's usual for Memorial's Strat Ops and Conference and Event Services team to enjoy their work, but the screening of Wanda Nolan's "The Muse" on June 25 at the Main Hall of Emera Innovation Exchange brought another level of feeling to the everyday. There was laughter, and there were tears, and there was renewed appreciation for what international students bring to Memorial University.

PhD student in Memorial's Folklore program and photographer TingTing Chen moved into Signal Hill Campus in 2018. She was not a photographer then, but with the support and friendship of her muse, Robert Tilley, her home on the Hill became the ecosystem where her fine art photography took root and absolutely bloomed. Nolan's 'The Muse' tells the story of the friendship between Ting Ting and Robert and the photography they created together. Sadly, Robert passed in late 2025.

Everyone present was moved by 'The Muse', and friends of Ting Ting became fans of her work.

Among other accolades, 'The Muse' was recently named the Best Short Documentary in the Canadian Screen Awards.

- Halfway up Signal Hill at Emera Innovation Exchange, Conference and Event Services is delighted to have been the venue for ICAM 8 - the 8th International Corraline Algae Society meeting. Over the past few days, the main conference hall has been abuzz with people from all over the world sharing ideas about ecology, biochemistry, geology, evolution, physiology and conservation of free-living, custaose and geniculate corraline algae. For those of us with less-than-passing knowledge of what corraline algae does, it is an important part of the ocean ecosystem that supports strong reefs and serves as a marine carbon sinks. The topic was science serious, but the team kept the moments of joy coming with swag bags, logo shirts, lunch adventures with brown bag lunches, and time to socialize.

Thanks for being here and thanks for your work! It was great to have you :-)
