Today, Newfoundland and Labrador is grieving the loss of a beautiful musical soul.
We have learned of the passing of Sheldon Thornhill, an accordion player whose love for our culture and traditional music shone through in every note he played. Sheldon carried the spirit of this place in his music, the stories, the dances, the laughter, and the deep sense of community that lives within our songs here in NL.
Sheldon was one of those rare musicians who didn’t just play the music, he lived it, shared it & helped keep it alive for others. His accordion spoke a language of tradition and connection that brought people together wherever he went. His presence will be deeply missed in kitchen parties, community halls, and every space where music and friendship meet.
To his family, friends, and the wider music community, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt condolences. In particular, we send sincere sympathy to Sean Sullivan of Sullivan's Songhouse, his music partner and dear friend. The bond they shared through exceptional music was something truly special, rooted in respect, joy, and a shared love for our heritage.
Somewhere beyond this world, it feels like heaven's accordion players are gathered to welcome you home, Sheldon, with familiar tunes, warm hearts, and music waiting at the gate.
Rest easy, Sheldon Thornhill. Your music will continue to echo wherever NL songs are played.
Sincere condolences from all of us in Hamilton Sound
