Well, it was a journey but our virtual Mummers Play is finally live!
After months of planning a live Mummers Play for Jordan Vincer’s Ryerson School of Performance thesis project, the COVID-19 pandemic hit and we were forced to move our production online.

This mummers play was written by Jordan Vincer and Nora Barker and directed by Jordan. It tells the story of the first theatrical performance to happen on the island of Newfoundland in 1583 and questions the innocence of the mummering tradition.
As part of Jordan’s thesis research he correlated Munmering to the genocide of the Beothuk people. Through this script we want to educate our audiences and ask them to question not only the Mummering tradition but all aspects of our culture.

Did you know a Mummers Play was the first recorded theatrical performance to happen in Canada. In 1583 British colonizers landed in Newfoundland and performed a Mummers Play, but what was their intent?
Riveting Productions is dedicated to education so as part of thesis project we are shedding light on the malicious background of Newfoundland Mummering.
