Mad, arguably the leading humor publication in American history, became a major force in American society for decades starting in the early 1950s and it is still published today, well into the 21st century. Beginning as a cutting-edge humor comic book created by Harvey Kurtzman for the famous EC line of the early 1950s, Mad evolved into the best-selling humor magazine of the second half of the 20th century, selling more than two million copies at its peak in the early 1970s. Mad became an empire with best-selling paperback reprints, merchandise and a long-running TV series, Mad TV, which ran from 1995 to 2009 on Fox, running over 300 episodes. This was followed by an animated sketch comedy series on the Cartoon Network that ran for an additional three seasons.
