Joan Foster Rug Hooking

Joan Foster Rug Hooking Home based business featuring traditional hooked mats, & wall hangings, as well as patterns & other rug hooking supplies.

I learned to hook watching my mother in 1979 but really became hooked after attending class at the Rug Hooking Guild of Nova Scotia’s annual school in 1993. I have been a member of that Guild and have attended several schools since then. I am a founding member and past president of the Rug Hooking Guild of Newfoundland and Labrador. I love to teach beginner workshops and also to teach hooking with

hosiery in the Grenfell tradition. I teach regularly in Newfoundland and have also taught in Nova Scotia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. Through my home-based business, I design and sell patterns as well as hook commissioned works. My rugs have been exhibited at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec as well as various other exhibits across the province. I have also received awards from the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador for the Preservation of a Traditional Craft and for Technical Skill.

Commissioned memory rug of a person’s family home which no longer exists is finished! Yarn and hosiery on linen. Having the photo as a visual aid was very helpful in doing the design and in color planning.

Another item off my bucket list - yesterday I made a piece of stained glass! Sarah Norman of Sarah’s Glass Works came to Springdale and taught a great class. Mr. Moose has found a temporary space to hang until he makes the trip to our cabin.
