I painted this creek rapid plien air. I saw ripples and currents; I experienced the sound of water cascading over rock; the sky reflected in calm regions outside the current. I ignored the distracting foliage; I could see below the surface; I could see value changes in the foam.. The last thing I did was take a photograph. I will host my last workshop of the season for painters interested in improving. Check it out at ArtsHub Brockville.

"Respect Lingers: Ortiagao" Plein Air Porto WC 11x15. An internet search suggests this monument celebrating the 19th century contributions of R Ortiagao: a defender of education, is still valid today. He stands near the university. The pencil sketch shows figures that walked by one of which looks back at the viewer. As I painted this a parade of students in black robes marched by me: shouting and banging pots: I sketched them and painting to follow!

Pencil on paper. Simple thumbnails for future use, including a parade of university students engaged in fraternity rituals: dressed in black robes, shouting and banging old pots and spoons as they marched through the community market square.

Beneath Ancient London Plane Trees, WC 11x15. Plein air, I completed this over 3 consecutive mornings. Features a range of hues to fit the feeling of morning light, drying leaves and the sandy boulevard. Pedestrians came in all shapes and styles. I focused on a little girl on the right (ribbon in her hair) and the woman on the left with a scarf around her neck.

Porto steep streets and alleys. As I drew the alley a tapas bar opened and filled with customers. I added more pedestrians to the park sketch, one person in particular was interesting: fedora, scarf and balls hanging from her pant cuffs. Started this 11x15 WC of a facade: needs refinement plus people.

Porto Pedestrians, WC, 11x15. Plein air. I sat in a light filled central plaza surrounded by tall classic buildings. I focused on the pedestrian strip and allowed the building facades to remain soft but luminous.

People on park benches tend to fidget even so you can capture enough information to paint from. Parked cars eventually move but offer a wonderful contrast against a stucco cream building wall. Small thumbnails take 5 minutes and work well to capture shape and shadows. Monotones are a quick warmup for colour.

There is 1 inch more at the top and the bottom of this 9x12 sketch. I plan to paint this and the drawing helps to simplify a complex perspective: steep streets in shade, lots of people.
