A Fresh Pair of Ears Contact information, map and directions, contact form, opening hours, services, ratings, photos, videos and announcements from A Fresh Pair of Ears, Performance Art, Sooke, BC.

It's actually a radio program on Sooke Community Radio (www.sooke.live) but yeah, performance art fits as well since I kind of fuddle with the radio form itself!

The July 12 program in which during the second part of my interview with Allie Picketts, I get my first music lesson or at least kind guidance towards what kind of career advancement techniques I should consider! Plus two concerti, one from the Dutch and the other from a Finnish composer and the first hour in which I endeavor to be a concert promoter of sorts with a concert happening at the same time as the broadcast with visiting Celtic artists Marrow Bones!

The second part of an interview with piano teacher and performer Allie Picketts and two concerti, broadcast on a Sunday between 6 and 9 on Sooke (BC) Community Radio, www.sooke.live

"Almost There", the July 9 program in which I invited local piano teacher and performer Allie Picketts to talk about her métier; the second part of this hour long talk was about how she would go about teaching one particular student, me and I moved that to the next A Fresh Pair of Ears.

The afternoon one-road-drive-home show I’ve been hosting weekly since the beginning of the summer at Sooke (BC) Community Radio (www.sooke.live) between 4 and 5:30 p.m.

Another program from early July as I belatedly provide archival radio programs for your late summer fun!

As the summer whizzes by (no surprise when you're doing two programs a week), I've started on the July batch of audio and transcripts (which are handmade by the way; can't afford AI and even if I could...). This one includes Mikey on Mike's conversation with Dave Stewart of the little ol' Sooke Philharmonic!

Still unsure whether I'll be able to continue into the rainy season, but the more I learn about this place, the more there is to say about it and the easier (theoretically) this task gets!

One show at a time...

As heard at Sooke Community Radio at www.sooke.live

ALMOST THERE, my weekly Thursday afternoon show which went from fill in to summer replacement to who knows what else? In any case, many to come forth since I'm only up to June 25th on this one, with no guests so a lot of birds and three from my childhood favorite having a birthday, Carly Simon. Oh and traffic and weather and all that afternoon show stuff.

My Thursday afternoon one-road-town drive home show aired between 4:00 and 5:30 p.m. pacific surfing time. This is about as normal as I get (comfortably). www.sooke.live

The June 21 episode audio, videos and links was all about both the solstice and the summer which made finding tunes easy, and many of them I also heard for the first time upon finding them. Also Walt Whitman fragments of poems having to do with summer spread throughout! And a full Solstice special: David First and Charlie Morrow (none more appropriate!) with their Solstice Prayers for Peace, created in 2025.

My weekly three hour radio program for Sooke Community Radio (www.sooke.live, Sooke being 40 miles from Victoria, BC) in which I try to sneak in as many New Music America references as possible.

On tonight's live FPE (airing in just under four hours 6 pm Pacific time), a Fluxus Infusion program with Simone Forti who we lost in July (4 audio tracks) and John Cage (two works including a newly released "Scottish Circus" by the Whistlebinkes) and more Classic Issue New Music folks (Margaret Leng Tan, Philip Glass, David First, Laurie Anderson, Philip Corner). Also the first of a new series where I'll be presenting over the next couple of months all of Kyle Gann's Hyperchromatica, which is what can be used if you're hearing too much praise about Angine de Poitrine. Now, that's microtonality! Go to www.sooke.live or wait a month for the substack (or Thursday at 8 p.m. Pacific for the replay!)

Another "Almost There" from June; you can also catch me live between 4 and 5:30 tomorrow!

Hi Ma! This is what I'm doing on my summer vacation, filling in for the Thursday radio program between 4:00 to 5:30 at www.sooke.live. Yes, I'm trying to be normal this time. But you know me...

NOT A FRESH PAIR OF BIG EARS! This one has the cute local Atom-Peewee local football mascot as we had a big sports reports, the kind you get in towns of 15,000! Up to June 11... snuck in some David Occhipinti bagatelles, unexpected cover versions of pop tunes and of course, polka!

The slight modification of my regular program's name was suggested by Joseph Celli and this was a good place to give it a spin!

NOT A FRESH PAIR OF EARS: "ALMOST THERE" which would be I think the first time I did it on a Thursday, which has been going on ever since... I think I can keep it up until September (unless they get me a Sherpa, but our volunteers can be put to better use).

This is a long text as the program actually had four interviews (two on tape) and a report, all which I transcribed, all the better to fix any mistakes I may have made.

Much community content with Mikey on Mike on his new show (Sounding Canadian eh?) premiere, a sports report, my interview with a librarian about the Sooke music holdings available to the public, Sue Elrington dropping in to invite people to our Thursday Night Market table of offerings and Mikey on Mike on Tape with a repeat of his preview of the Sooke Secret Gardens tour this year (which had not yet happened).

The biggest mistake of this one was of course not turning on the "broadcast" button until minute 24 so you get the version that only aired as a rerun. (When we forget to hit the "broadcast" button, nothing live gets through and our shuffle takes over!)

Also with the audio and the links to the Freddy Fender tracks I was able to get in to celebrate his birthday anniversary!

Airing on a Thursday between 4 and 5:30 at www.sooke.live, Sooke (British Columbia, Vancouver Island) Community Radio
